(Crain’s) — A Democratic state senator from Buffalo has conceded defeat to his Republican opponent, ensuring the GOP of at least half of the seats in the narrowly divided upper chamber come January. If one of the two Republican challengers in the remaining undecided Senate races emerges with a victory, as appears likely, the party would retake control of the chamber after two years in the minority.  State Sen. Antoine Thompson acknowledged Tuesday morning that he had lost to Republican Mark Grisanti in a race that many observers did not expect to be a potential defeat for the Democrats. No Republican even ran for the seat in 2006 or 2008. But Mr. Grisanti benefited from high local turnout among Republican voters who came to the polls to support Buffalo developer Carl Paladino in his bid for governor.
