(Crain’s) — Shoppers hitting the streets in lower Manhattan this holiday season will encounter a different kind of barcode as they shop for gifts, as the Alliance for Downtown New York will be the first business improvement district here to use Scanbuy Inc.’s two-dimensional barcode technology to market individual stores directly to consumers. Customers can use the camera in their cell phones, coupled with Scanbuy’s ScanLife code reader, to scan barcodes and receive shopping and dining guides, a special holiday page featuring seasonal discounts, event listings and more. The technology gives shoppers instant, directed information at the point of purchase.
