Alexander Shipp has had her share of criticism in the past, as she’s repeatedly dodged her commentary on colorism in Hollywood and how that may or may not have played a part in her securing the role of Storm in Marvel’s latest adaptation of X-Men.
Shipp again caught heat on social media after a Variety interview revealed that Beale Street actress KiKi Layne was vying for her role. Layne told reporters on the red carpet at Sunday’s Critic’s Choice Awards that she was “actively plotting” for the role.
“She was an image of myself, of a powerful chocolate black woman, and I just think that’s an amazing image to have and I really want to play Storm,” Layne said.
Many took the opportunity to drag Shipp up and down their Twitter feed over the possibility that her coveted role would be given to an actress with more likeness to Storm’s essence.
After the pounding, Shipp broke her silence on Twitter to say this:
“I won’t ever bad mouth a fellow actor. I won’t ever actively try to take another hard working actors job. Y’all can keep trying to pin black women against each other but it won’t work on me, honey,” she wrote. “Stay blessed.”

“Black twitter is so powerful. One second we’re trying to rally and define why our lives matter, the next we’re making each other feel like we’re not worthy of one. I’ll only spread and give love, no matter what tone my skin falls under. Bless up y’all Ima go back to work,” she wrote.

But the lashing continued, giving Shipp a hard lesson about comparing her faux struggle to Black Lives Matter, her profound ignorance on colorism and the effects it has on job opportunities, or the lack thereof in Hollywood or anywhere else.

It may be a good idea for Shipp to disable her comments for a while until this blows over.
