(Crain’s) — The New York Department of Labor is attempting to collect $140 million in unemployment insurance owed by more than 80,000 people who have defrauded the state, said State Labor Commissioner Colleen Gardner.

The recouped money will go to the New York state Unemployment Insurance Trust Fund. The 80,000 people have owed money for at least six months, with some debts as old as 10 years, Ms. Gardner said.
