’24 Shades Of Business’ Is The Coloring Book For Black Women We’ve Been Waiting For
While I take care of others as a psychotherapist, it is important that I also take care of myself. Whether it’s taking trips, putting my phone on do not disturb or turning on my favorite podcast, it’s crucial that I find time for self-care so I can feel rejuvenated. Thanks to author Latoya Nicole and her latest creation, “24 Shades of Business: An Adult Coloring Book,” I’ve found yet another book to tuck away with after a long day.
The illustrations in the Amazon best-seller coloring book show black women at work in various professions, including a CEO, photographer, a yoga instructor, beautician and the two that struck me the most, the therapist and blogger. Deemed “the coloring book for the strong and stressed out woman,” 24 Shades of Business taps into your creative side while giving you a cathartic experience that takes your mind away from the everyday stress of being a hardworking black woman.
“Black women can be so self-sufficient and self-sacrificing that sometimes we can forget the importance of self-care,” said author Latoya Nicole in a statement. “I wanted to create something that I could relate to when coloring as an entrepreneur as well as something that highlighted the beauty of strong and successful African American women.” Latoya continued, “It’s important for us to have positive representation that normalizes black women who are not only about taking care of their families but that also handle their business and make good role models. The time and focus that adult coloring takes can help remove the focus from the negative issues and habits and focus them in a more productive way.”
Besides being a therapeutic activity, coloring the manes, faces and wardrobes was quite fun. Figuring out which colors to put on their eyes and lips and adding shades to their wardrobe that compliments melanin the best offered a nice escape from the many distractions around me and the to-do-list that never ends.
There are also inspirational quotes and crossword puzzles that test your black history and remind you of what it takes to be successful in your career.
