“God created black people; Black people created style” — George C. Wolfe
I am still riding a wave after being in New York City for what was without question one of the dopest weeks in fashion earlier this month. What made this week so dope, some of you might be wondering, is the fact that NYFW, The Curvy Con, and Essence Street Style all took place in the Big Apple within a matter of days from one another. There were bodies everywhere, literally and figuratively, and melanin was in abundance. Everyone was committed to being dressed to impressed, and no one styled and wowed like Black women.
Black women have always reigned supreme when it comes to style (and every other area of life). From our ancestors’ beginnings in their homelands, where style represented different tribes, to our days of oppression when we longed to hold on to our identity and especially now, Black women always show up and style out. It is as if style is a code God embedded in our genetic makeup. This birthright is why the culture vultures are always swooping down and stealing our ish! However, even when they attempt to recreate what we have mastered, it never translates the same because Black women are a vibe that only we possess.

Just like there is no one way to be a woman, there is no one way to slay. No one understands these truths like Black women who love fashion and are always unapologetic about our personal style. Whether the fashion is high end, thrifted, home sewn, or straight from a department store, Black women know how to use what they have to create a one-of-a-kind look.
Some say class determines style; some say size dictates a woman’s ability to be stylish and others say age limits style, and while these beliefs may prove to be true for others, Black women see this as a white lie (pun intended). Black women understand that despite where we come from, where we are going, or where we are, we should always show up and style out.
Want to see proof? Check out these magical Black women from different walks of life who show up and style out on a regular basis and give credence to the notion that we created style.
