(Washington Business Journal) — The Washington-area economy threatens to stall, again, but at least District government employees are boosting bottom lines elsewhere as they travel to some fine hotels across the country.

Most government travel is tied to conventions, seminars, educational visits, etc. Rarely do D.C. staffers miss an opportunity to travel well, but we do not pronounce judgment here on why they go.

In June, District employees charged $38,001 at hotels outside of Washington and roughly the same amount on airfare and Amtrak tickets. That does not include per diems, restaurants, travel booking fees and trip insurance. Nor does it include travel booked on an employee’s individual credit card and then repaid — that data isn’t readily available.
