D.C. has proposed a set of new regulations governing the city’s food cart business, with the goal of bringing in more street vendors and allowing existing vendors to expand their business.

The new set of regulations have been in the works for several years, according to Mike Rupert, a spokesman for the city’s Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs. The city’s existing regulations, as well as a moratorium on new vendor licenses that was only briefly lifted in 2007, have kept the city’s food cart scene from becoming more diverse, as the regulations limited such things as the appearance of carts and who could operate them.
