(Crain’s) — Pat Banerjee landed a $106,000 federal grant late last year to help expand his start-up firm, which makes simulators for surgeons in training to practice their technique.

If Westmont-based ImmersiveTouch had set up shop in Wisconsin, Mr. Banerjee would have doubled that money through a program that matches federal grants awarded to startups in the Badger state. At least 20 other states — Illinois not among them — have similar laws to nurture budding biomedical and high-tech sectors.
