We were elated to learn that Tina Knowles married her boyfriend Richard Lawson earlier this month. Although it was no secret that the two were an item, it seemed unlikely that Ms. Tina would remarry—especially considering all that she had been through in her first marriage to Mathew Knowles.
Interestingly, the 61-year-old says that it was her 3-year-old granddaughter Blue Ivy who first suggested that they tie the knot during a family vacation last September.
“Richard said, ‘Oh, Blue, soon. Do you approve?’ And she said yes,” Tina told People. “That’s the first time we talked seriously about getting married.”
The couple dated 18 months before becoming husband and wife. Tina admits that the relationship came as a pleasant surprise.
“There was a time when I doubted if I would find love again,” she told the magazine. “But I was determined to be happy, and God sent somebody into my life.”
“You can find love at any age,” she continued. “You just have to go for it.”
Months after Blue’s suggestion, the two exchanged vows aboard a yacht called “Eternity” during an all-white wedding ceremony. Guest included Beyoncé, Solange, Jay Z, Alan Ferguson, Richard’s two children, Tina’s two grandchildren, actor Samuel Jackson, Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams.
“It couldn’t have been more perfect,” Tina said of her wedding day.
As for her decision to have guests dress in all white, Tina admits that it has become a bit of a family tradition since Beyoncé’s 2008 wedding.
“Beyoncé started it, and then Kelly and Solange had all-white weddings,’ she said. “It’s just elegant, and white represents the purity of love.”
And oh yeah, she has taken her new hubby’s last name.
