Are Black Businesses Suffering From An Undeserved Rep for Bad Customer Service?

The Grio has been focusing on black-owned businesses and, more specifically, some of the issues facing these companies.  One of the common complaints that the author, Lawrence Watkins, saw across social media in response to his story is this: “Customer service is terrible with black-owned businesses.”

“Although this is definitely not true for many black businesses, it is an area in which we need to pay special attention,” writes Watkins. Good customer service breeds more business and customer loyalty, he continues. People who are “very satisfied” are more likely to come back and spread the word to others about the quality of the service.

The story lays out the barriers to good customer service: stressed out owners and workers who wear a number of different hats; arguing with customers in “tense situations”; and a failure to go the extra mile beyond the sale, giving the customer a good experience overall.

It ought to be said that any of these issues could plague a business owned by anyone from any background. But the fact is if there’s a perception that black businesses specifically are more prone to these issues, it could preclude that business’ success.

Is this an undeserved reputation for black-owned businesses? And please take to the comments to talk up the great customer experiences you’ve had with a black-owned business.

Very interesting concept, and I’ll have to admit that I’ve gone to black businesses and received awful service, particularly in restaurants and other service industry establishments.

But there’s one consistent thing I notice about all the people giving me poor service: they are normally younger than 25, African American or Hispanic (but whites and Asians don’t get a pass, either), they do not have at least a high school diploma, and are paid a very low wage.

This is not necessarily the fault of the employee as much as it is the employer. The company, be it a restaurant, a grocery store or even a clothing store fails to take the time to properly train these young people.

These are all sales and marketing jobs and they are at the front end of any business. These people are who the public encounter when they walk in the door and it only takes a few minutes to turn what could have been a loyal customer into a permanent detractor who will never have anything kind to say about your company ever again.

You might go into your favorite soul food restaurant and expect the best catfish and grits in town, but a snotty attitude from a waitress or a cashier will make the experience awful and the food quality won’t matter because the cook is not the front end worker.

Black businesses would do well to invest in training for their employees the same way other businesses do, because there is already a negative stereotype about poor service. By proving the stereotype right, no business can survive for long.

Based on the customer service I’ve received from black folks at any company in general I believe this is an accurate observation. I don’t think black owned businesses provide the worst customer service when compared to say an Asian Indian owned business. Bottom line minority owned businesses are mostly nice to white customers. For example West Indian restaurants roll out the red carpet for whites but could care less about us.

West Indian restaurants need to read this article, because either they act like they’re doing you a favor, or don’t have menu items. I have no problem supporting your business, but make me want to come back, don’t force me to spend my money elsewhere and then say we don’t support!

Cosign!!! Im in Brooklyn so I’m going to shout out Sugarcane, Footprints, Janelles.. I love you but the service is offensive. One day I’ll be able to leave you and your bar alone…

Actually, some what relates, I have known several people who own businesses but pretend that they are just the manager/accountant/representative/whateva just to avoid the shock and then disbelief that some one so young/black/female/whateva owned the business, followed by an assumption that the service/quality/product is poor.

Nope,ni66ers are lazy loud mouthed savages and normal humans avoid them.
