Today Viola Davis turns 52 years old, and every time we hear the actress speak she relays the wisdom of a woman whose lived, learned, and loved quite a bit. The most important aspect of the love Davis speaks of is for self, regularly sharing insight on how she came to appreciate the skin she’s in and also realize that she is much more than her physical makeup. She’s a sexual, intelligent, strong, self-reliant being, and we could all learn something from the example she sets.
With that in mind, we decided to put together a list of the lessons Davis has taught us about womanhood over the years in hope that you’ll be inspired to follow her lead and come into your own self-assured being as well. Check out the lessons on the next few pages.
“You cannot live to please everyone else. You have to edify, educate and fulfill your own dreams and destiny.”
“Do not live someone else’s life and someone else’s idea of what womanhood is. Womanhood is you. Womanhood is everything that’s inside of you.”
“I don’t have any time to stay up all night worrying about what someone who doesn’t love me has to say about me.”
“I believe that the privilege of a lifetime is being who you are, truly being who you are.”
“I don’t care how sexy or beautiful any woman is. At the end of the day, she has to take her makeup off. At the end of the day, she’s more than just pretty.”
“You have two stark choices when you find yourself in a really desperate situation. You can either fold and cave-in to it or you can become really passionate about getting out of it. When you’re really passionate, you’re going to grab hold of every rope you see, and wrap them around your arms and legs to claw your way out. And that’s the way I’ve felt in my life.”
“It feels really good to embrace exactly who I am and be my sexy, to be my sexualized, to be my woman.”
“Self-deprecation is not an answer to keeping one’s balance. I think that it’s very damaging.”
