She might have been one, if not the only black face at Bayside High on television’s beloved teen dream comedy, “Saved By the Bell,” but she was hands down the most fashionable student in that place. A hopeful fashion designer, Lark Voorhies’ character of Lisa Turtle was the definition of feminine with her curly hair and flirty, fluffy skirts, cute blouses, and colorful, shoulder-padded up blazers. While I spent half of my time watching “Saved By Bell” to see Zack Morris (*swoon*), I spent the other half scoping out Lisa’s style. She never disappointed.
Crayola Colors Were Her Friend
If you ever saw Lisa Turtle in neutral colors, let me know, because everytime I saw her on SBTB, she was rocking the brightest of shades. And unique colors at that: kiwi, cyan, fuschia–whatever you can think of. Maybe it was a ’90s thing, because a lot of the characters seemed to go with rainbow bright shades, but Turtle’s funky printed sweaters, jackets and accessories in tropical colors made her look the coolest.
She Stayed With Her Accessories
This chick’s accessory game was on point! It was a rarity you didn’t see homegirl coordinated with a matching hat, earrings, headband, bangles or pin. She even rocked cute hair scrunchies to get that ponytail right.
All Girlie Everything
While her girls Jessie and Kelly went for nerdy chic and extremely under-dressed (Kelly had on a belly shirt and daisy dukes every other episode), Lisa stayed uber-feminine and lady like. Flirty, ruffled skirts and dresses were her thing. And although she would show some leg or arm from time to time, it was never too much (*cue the Luther voice*).
Blaze it Up
Sometimes Lisa dressed more like she was going to someone’s business meeting rather than third period science class. Why? Because she stayed with her blazers and chic jackets. They would vary from cropped two-toned outerwear pieces to embellished jackets a la Janet Jackson in the early days. Still heavily coordinated, always fresh.
Keep That Hair Whipped When All Else Fails
God forbid they try anything different with her hair, for the most part, Lisa Turtle’s hair would stay curly and full. But she wouldn’t rely on just wearing it down all the time. Like a true fashionista, those ponytails had the plumpest, nicest bangs, and her updos were always over-the-top in a good way. Lisa was definitely fresh from head to toe…literally.
