I’m always curious about when a couple knew they were in love. It does seem to happen in an instant, doesn’t it? Or at least one little moment makes you realize you loved somebody all along. Sometimes that moment is quirky, unexpected and–at the time–not even all that enjoyable! It shouldn’t come as too big of a surprise, though, since in the end it’s the little gestures that mean everything rather than the grand ones. It’s how people react in everyday, totally ordinary moments that tell you how they really are. And so, after asking dozens of men when they realized they loved their girlfriend or wife, I received very few answers that had to do with moments of grandeur, and a lot of answers that were nice and simple. Here are 15 moments men realize they’re in love with a woman.

She says nothing when you spend a half hour in the bathroom
One guy said that, after a…um…battle with the toilet, during which he’d left his girlfriend alone on the couch for 45 minutes, he came back and she said nothing. Well, she said, “Need some Peptobismol?” and when he said, “No thanks,” she said, “Okay. What should we watch on Netflix?”

She shares her food that she really wanted to herself
One friend said he went to his girlfriend’s house, having had no time to eat dinner, and when he got there she had just finished making an elaborate, towering sandwich that he could tell she was so excited about and had spent a long time making. When she could see he was hungry she said, “Here. Have it. I wasn’t even that hungry.” And then she proceeded to eat two bananas and pretend that’s all she wanted anyways.
She’s excited for your boy’s weekend out of town
A lot of guys struggle to find a partner who is excited when they say, “I’m going to Vegas for the weekend with my friends. We’re going to drink a lot. No girlfriends allowed.” But when one guy found a woman who wasn’t only excited about that, but loved the stories of the drunken shenanigans (that involved one guy getting arrested), he knew he could spend his life with her.
She doesn’t mind catching your cold
True generosity means giving something that is difficult to give away. Giving your time and company to a very sick man is generous, since you can get sick, too! That’s why one guy knew he loved his girlfriend when she spent the week at his place when he had the flu, sleeping in the same bed with him, just to help him get better.

She let’s you see your own mistakes
One guy told me that he knew he loved his girlfriend after a certain fight they had. He had definitely overreacted and been an idiot, but his girlfriend didn’t tell him that. She simply quietly said she was going to give him some space for a few days. He realized later that she didn’t get off on proving she was right, or yelling. She trusted him to realize his own mistake.

She stands up for herself
There’s nothing hotter than a woman who demands respect. But it’s easy to demand respect from people we’re not that close to, or from whom we have nothing to lose (like a rude bartender or guy at a restaurant). It takes a lot of courage to stand your ground with somebody with whom you’re close, or who can affect your future. That’s why one guy said he knew he loved his girlfriend when she refused to run an errand for her boss that would be unethical (buying the mistress a present). She said she’d rather lose her job than her values.

She facilitates your favorite hobby…that isn’t really her thing
One guy knew he could spend eternity with a woman when, for his birthday, she bought him and his best friend tickets to a Lakers game. She didn’t like sports, but she knew there was nothing he’d rather do for his birthday, so she just said, “Go ahead. We can have dinner later this week or something.”

She understands your crazy family immediately
One man said he was always nervous about bringing a woman home to meet his family because they were generally very combative, said things that were offensive and made people uncomfortable, which freaked women out. But not this one woman; this woman laughed it off on the sidelines with him, and handled his family with total tact. She wasn’t scared at all, and so he loved her.

She makes a sacrifice for her pet
Men are suckers for a little maternal instinct and when a woman doesn’t have a child to show that to, a pet is the next best thing. My friend said he loved his girlfriend when she slept on the floor all night next to her dog after he’d had surgery, and needed help getting up to use the bathroom (FYI he needed to use it a lot because he was incontinent).
She is completely non-self-conscious
One guy said that one night, his girlfriend looked like she had dirt on her face. When he said, “I think you have dirt on your face” she started laughing hysterically and said, “That’s what I get for trying to learn how to do contouring with my makeup.” He loved that she didn’t get offended, and could laugh at herself when she looked silly.
She almost left
One guy said he just knew he loved his girlfriend when she almost left him. He had been taking her for granted, not making enough time in his schedule for her and assuming she’d stick around. He didn’t realize he’d been doing that, actually, until she almost left. Then it clicked for him; he loved her and couldn’t image life without her.
She made him laugh when he really needed it
`
One guy said that, after he’d been fired (in a rather unfair way), he was really fired up. He was pacing the room yelling, cursing and just losing it. When he was done, his girlfriend made the perfect joke at a time he never thought he could laugh. Then he knew that with her, he could get through anything life threw his way.
She didn’t care when a tire went flat/everything went wrong
If you want to see how patient somebody really is, watch them get a flat tire. One man said that on a road trip with his girlfriend, after she’d been complaining that she needed to pee for a while but he kept insisting the next stop would be better, they got a flat tire. Instead of yelling at him for not stopping at a bathroom earlier, his girlfriend just got this look on her face like “We don’t need an argument on top of a flat tire” and wandered off behind a tree to pee. When she came back, she asked how she could help.

She remembered a little something special
Sometimes it takes a food allergy to know you love somebody. One guy said he knew he loved his girlfriend when, after dating her for a few months, he opened her pantry to find low-acidity coffee and coconut milk. She remember that he loved coffee, but had acid reflux and was lactose intolerant. “I figured I’d just keep it here for you” she said and he said, “I love you.”

She was genuinely happy for somebody else
It takes a really happy, grounded person to be happy for other people. One man knew he loved his partner when, immediately after not getting a promotion she wanted, she got a phone call from her friend saying she’d just gotten a new job she really wanted. The woman went immediately from wallowing into planning a party for her friend, and her boyfriend knew her for being so selfless.
