House Hacks is a homemaking column that offers weekly tips on organizing, cleaning and maintaining a home in the most efficient way possible.

Bringing order to your lingerie drawer can prove to be a nearly impossible task. It seems that no matter how neatly you place your undergarments in your dresser on laundry day, by midweek the chest has taken on a mind of its own, and your bras and panties are scattered about the drawer.

After much trial and error, I’ve learned that the key to maintaining order in my lingerie drawer (or any drawer for that matter) is compartmentalizing. Finding a way to separate your bras from your panties and your panties from your thongs can make a world of a difference. While some would suggest going out and purchasing draw organizers from Target or Bed, Bath & Beyond, there’s an easier and more cost-effective way to make this happen. Real Simple recommends cutting old shoe boxes in half along the length or width of the box. From there, you can place them in the drawer, allowing the cut-outs to act as mini compartments that separate your folded intimate garments.

Of course, it will be up to you to maintain these compartments as you insert and remove items from the drawer each day, but seeing the sections already there can serve as a reminder that everything has a place—even inside of your lingerie drawer.

If you’d like to get fancy with your compartments, you can cover them with fabric or wallpaper.
