Moms are worriers. That’s just what they do. When you meet your man’s mom for the first time, she probably makes a lot of that first impression. Obviously, you can always redeem yourself later. But you’ll make things easier on everyone if you’re aware of these eight things your boyfriend’s mom notices about you right away.

How you’re dressed
Did you go for the conservative look? Do you have on your cardigan and flats today, and one of those little flowy blouses with the ruffles in front? Did you say, “Screw it? I like looking hot around my man” and stick to that tank top with the side boob?

What she thinks
Moms can usually see right through you if you dress like you’re going to church. They know they’re son—they’ve seen his flings over the years. They’re not buying it. You should, however, make some effort to put your tits away. She’ll appreciate that. But keep your own style.

Piercings/Tattoos
It’s okay—we all pierced something besides our ears in an angsty phase. Maybe it was your belly button when your abs were nice that one summer. Maybe it’s that dolphin tattoo on your inner arm you got, “as a joke.”

What she thinks
If she judges that you have those things, there is little you can do about that. Hopefully, she is cooler than that. But even a laid back mother might judge it if you made zero effort to cover those up. In other words, don’t wear a crop top if you have a belly ring. Don’t wear an off the shoulder top just to show off your shoulder tattoo.

Did you bring anything?
Did you bring her something? A hostess gift if you’re eating at her place, or even just a little greeting gift if you’re going to a restaurant? 2. What did you bring? Are we talking chocolate covered pretzels or a set of champagne glasses?

What she thinks
If you’re going to her home, definitely bring something. If you don’t, she might frown upon that. If you’re meeting her out somewhere, she won’t notice if you don’t bring a gift. But she’ll be blown away if you do! So, do! Keep it simple, though. If you overdo it, she’ll feel like you’re trying to buy her approval.

Are you affectionate with him?
When you’re all walking to the restaurant, do you hold your man’s hand? When he’s talking at dinner, do you look at him lovingly? Do you give him a kiss on the cheek when you get back from the bathroom?

What she thinks
If you’d usually be all over your man in public, well, maybe tone that down for his mom. But you don’t need to act like he’s just your friend. Don’t worry about making his mom uncomfortable—she wants to see that her son is loved. Give him some affection!

Do you go for the hug or handshake?
When you first meet her, do you shake her hand or go for the hug?

Go for the hug! She’ll only see that as a good thing. Even if she isn’t a “hugger,” she won’t be offended that you went for it. She’ll find it endearing you already feel so close to her. If you go for the handshake, she might think you’re nervous.

How passionate you are about your work
She’s going to ask you about your work, of course. Are you eager to talk about it? Do you light up when you talk about it? Do you give a very short, matter-of-fact answer? Do you even sound resentful?

What she thinks
Mamas are wise enough to know that a woman who is unhappy in her career struggles to be happy in her relationship. She at least wants to know you’re pursuing something that makes you happy. She’d rather you were an intern at your dream company than making good money in a place that makes your eyes look dead inside.

How you talk about your family
She’ll ask you about your family. Where they live, if there are siblings, how often you see your parents etc. Do you smile when you talk about them? Do you seem like you’re hiding something?

What she thinks
His mom wants to see that you have a good relationship with your family. She doesn’t want to imagine her son at your Thanksgiving dinners, filled with yelling and evil looks and drunken arguments. She wants to see that you sound loving and happy when you talk about your family.

Do you force conversation or let it flow?
If there is a silence, do you always fill it? Do you contribute to conversations between your man and his mom, or wait for somebody to address you?

If she’s going to potentially spend holidays for the rest of her life with you, she needs to feel relaxed around you. She can’t feel like you’re always nervously looking to fill the silence. She also wants to see that you assert yourself in conversations that are already happening, though this tells her you don’t take a backseat in the relationship.
