All of us have a burning desire in our hearts to achieve something. It’s that goal we hope to accomplish in our lifetime that will help define who we are. Hopefully you have begun your journey as time waits for no man. Some of us will find ourselves successful while others will soon discover it will take more time to achieve than we imagined.

But what happens when the dreams you had for your life were never pass?

There comes a time when we need to be real with ourselves. It’s not about being negative, but simply being honest. Here are some signs it might be time to stop following your dream.

Didn’t thoroughly research

One of the worst things you can do when it comes to your dream is jump in without doing any research or legwork. Things just don’t work that way. Before you commit to your dreams you need to know everything there is about them to help put you in the best position possible of achieving them. Slow down and roll up your sleeves.

Lost your passion

Why do you insist on trying to make something work when you no longer want to do it? Passion is super important when it comes to our goals because without it, we lose our power to keep going. There are going to be trials, obstacles and setbacks that will challenge you through life. If you lack passion, you will find it very hard to persevere.

Feel a pull in a different direction

Maybe what you thought you were supposed to do was only a stepping stone to your real calling. Life always has a funny way of revealing the paths we’re meant to take–which is why you hear stories about lawyers leaving their practice to pursue a culinary venture. Be careful how much you fight the pull to go in a different direction. You could very well miss out on what you’re really meant to do.

It’s costing too much money

There’s a big difference between living on a tight budget to fund your dream and wildly putting all of your money into something that’s not guaranteed to work. Yes there are instances when you need to go big or go home, but is it really smart to rack up an obscene amount of debt for an uncertain future–and we’re not talking about advancing your education. You might want to pump your breaks if you’ve spent rent-free years on your friend’s couch with no forecast of secure money in sight.

Experience a major life change

Sometimes we have to make sacrifices for the greater good of our families and those we love. Does it mean we can never do anything for ourselves? Heck no. You just have to decide where your priorities are in your life. Certain life changes are so major that they might require our undivided attention for a period of time. You can always keep trucking down your road to success, but if things get a little tight, something might have to give.

Aren’t willing to make edits

This is more about you and your stubbornness than a dream not panning out. It’s really great you have a set vision for your life. Not everyone does which is really a shame. That however doesn’t mean you draft your goals in pen without the possibility of making necessary edits. You could very well be hitting road blocks because of your refusal to change one or two components.

Causes too many sacrifices

Some of the best things in life worth having require the necessary sacrifices. You might want to verify how important your dream is if it’s causing you to lose everything in your life. It’s one thing to experience a financial setback for a time being, but too many sacrifices (e.g. relationships, your stable job, family) might not be worth it.

Makes you lose sight of reality

Have you ever met a person who borders on the line of being insane with their dreams? Yes it’s good to speak into existence all the things you plan to accomplish, but if you’re pushing 60, have no life savings or 401(k), no stable job, and live with a friend because you can’t afford a home (or rent), it’s time to make some changes. Don’t get so caught up in the “what ifs” that you fail to take care of reality.

Stop believing in yourself

Thankfully this is something we can fix.

How can you expect to see your dream through if you have given up on yourself? You need to believe you possess the power to achieve what your heart desires–if not, you’re kinda wasting your own time. Now this doesn’t mean you must abandon all of your wants, but you might want to put them on the back burner for the time being so you can rebuild your confidence.
