When rapper 50 Cent was ready to release his third album, he realized that “Curtis” would be dropping the same day as Kanye West’s “Graduation” album. A master at drawing attention to himself, the Queens rapper make a public challenge with the uber producer that if West sold more albums than he did in the first week, the “In Da Club” rapper would retire from making music for good. Fiddy went around touting the challenge and the pair even squared off against each other at the MTV VMA’s that year. The moment of judgement came and went with West’s “Graduation” selling almost a million copies in its first week, outselling Fiddy by almost 300,000 albums. Both albums eventually went platinum and West admitted later that it was just a publicity stunt to sell albums.
