With the modern advances in technology and the power to have the world at our fingertips 24/7, we are constantly bombarded with information and people vying for our time. These celebs were begging for attention with these shameless publicity stunts.

Nicki Minaj

Last year Miley Cyrus was crowned the queen of attention wh*ring at the MTV VMA’s but this year the honors went to Nicki Minaj. The Young Money princess performed “Anaconda,” her ode to big behinds everywhere, but when she came back out to rap her part of “Bang Bang” with Jessie J and Ariana Grande, she was having technical difficulties. Minaj had to clutch her black dress with both hands because she wasn’t fully zipped up when she headed back onstage. But some people feel the rapper staged the whole thing. A source who was present at dress rehearsals said Minaj wore the same dress onstage and it was unzipped then as well. The source also said she was grabbing it in a “weird way to get a better idea of how much would be exposed.”

Janet Jackson

It was the nipple shot heard around the world. Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake teamed up for an epic performance at the 2004 Super Bowl and they certainly made history, alright. At the end of their performance, Timberlake ripped Jackson’s top and with that he introduced the “Rhythm Nation” singer’s areola to 140 million viewers. At the time it was the most recorded and replayed moment in TiVo history. They both insisted it was an accident but with a new album in stores, many believed this was a shameless attempt by Jackson to receive additional buzz.

50 Cent and Floyd Mayweather

Rapper 50 Cent has always said he was a born hustler and he certainly knows what to do to get attention. Sometimes he uses that power for evil instead of good. Fiddy’s failed bromance with Floyd “Money” Mayweather is no secret but before they had their recent falling out, they used to be thicker than thieves. So their fans were shocked when 50 Cent and Mayweather were going back and forth at each other on twitter following the champ’s release from prison. Hitting below the belt, Fiddy announced that he was starting a partnership with Mayweather’s estranged father but it turns out, the entire “argument” was staged to draw attention to Money Mayweather to help his name make headlines.

Kanye West and 50 Cent

When rapper 50 Cent was ready to release his third album, he realized that “Curtis” would be dropping the same day as Kanye West’s “Graduation” album. A master at drawing attention to himself, the Queens rapper make a public challenge with the uber producer that if West sold more albums than he did in the first week, the “In Da Club” rapper would retire from making music for good. Fiddy went around touting the challenge and the pair even squared off against each other at the MTV VMA’s that year. The moment of judgement came and went with West’s “Graduation” selling almost a million copies in its first week, outselling Fiddy by almost 300,000 albums. Both albums eventually went platinum and West admitted later that it was just a publicity stunt to sell albums.

Dennis Rodman

It is obvious Dennis Rodman has always danced to the beat of his own drum. One of the best rebounders to ever step on the basketball court, Rodman won the respect of his coaches and players alike with his hard work and dedication. But off of the court, Rodman was free to express himself, which he did with questionable clothing, wild hair colors and painted nails. Back in 1996, the Chicago Bulls star announced to the media that he was getting married to a smart, beautiful woman. He showed up to his book signing wearing a wedding dress, wig and full make up ready to marry himself.

Ray J

Even though he’s a fixture on reality television, many people have forgotten that Ray J actually started his career out as an R&B singer. But over time Brandy’s younger brother found another way to make money and stay in the limelight. Going back to his singing roots, last year Ray J decided to release some new music. Knowing a surefire way to get attention, Ray J dropped “I Hit It First,” a song everyone knew was about his ex Kim Kardashian. He even used a pixilated version of well-known photo of the reality show star for the single’s covert art.

Brian McKnight

Brian McKnight may know how to make baby-making music but he went from sultry to downright vulgar when he decided to write a song about a woman’s nether regions. “If You’re Ready To Learn” shocked more than just McKnight’s fans because so many were surprised to hear the “One Last Cry” singer be so sexually explicit. The song may have rubbed some people the wrong way but it did help McKnight find new fans in the adult film community because they were interested in having him perform the song at their video awards ceremony. However, with all of the negative attention that it brought, McKnight vowed to never perform the song live.

Nicki Minaj

In this day and age where stars are showing up in meat dresses and inside of human sized eggs, Nicki Minaj had to do something to stand out from the rest and she has become an expert at it. She showed up at the iHeartRadio Music Festival’s red carpet in 2011 wearing something around her neck that garnered a lot of stares. The “Pills N Potions” rapper had a pink fried chicken wing dangling from a necklace. The stunt immediately caused a ruckus and it brought up the old connotation of Black people’s love fried chicken. Minaj was no stranger to having her outfits speak for her. A month before that, she showed up to the MTV VMA’s wearing a surgical mask and bubble gum outfit complete with a blonde beehive.

Madonna

What started out as an homage to her inaugural performance at the MTV VMA’s turned into one of the most talked about moments in the award ceremony’s history. In 2003, Madonna was tapped to once again perform “Like A Virgin” but this time she was joined onstage with pop stars Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. The budding divas wore white wedding dresses and a veil and Madonna emerged as the groom rocking all black complete with a top hat. The three divas danced and sang together and Madonna even removed the garter belt from Aguilera’s thigh. And then everyone was caught off guard when Madonna exchanged a sloppy kiss with Spears. The crowd went wild and Madonna and Spears were a hot topic for weeks to follow.

Kim Kardashian

To hear Kris Humphries and his family tell it, his marriage to Kim Kardashian was a sham and a poor publicity stunt done solely for television ratings. The NBA baller popped the big question just six months after dating the reality show star and their impending nuptials was a central part of Kardashian’s reality show. The most photographed woman in the world pulled the plug 72 days into their marriage leaving the Humphries clan to believe that her feelings for the former Brooklyn Nets player was never real and just a big show for television.

Frank Ocean

It isn’t an easy thing to come out of the closet to your family and friends and it certainly isn’t easy for an artist to make the public announcement. So when R&B crooner Frank Ocean revealed that he was bisexual he was applauded for his bravery. But some people questioned the timing of it. Ocean made the announcement just two weeks before his debut album “Channel Orange” dropped. Overnight Ocean’s twitter followers jumped up by half a million and the album was pushed up.

Justin Timberlake

Justin Timberlake’s first love was none other than Britney Spears. But apparently the pop star broke Timberlake’s heart by allegedly cheating on him. When he was ready to fly solo as an artist, the curly-haired heartthrob turned his heartache and pain into the song “Cry Me A River,” which was inspired by their breakup. A Britney Spears lookalike was even cast for the music video. The song was the second single off of Timberlake’s solo debut album and “Justified” debuted at the second spot on the Billboard charts with nearly half a million copies sold in the first week.
