Are you superstitious? And not just don’t cross black cats or walk under ladders but what types of behaviors represent a not-so-great sign in your relationship? Some of these are silly superstitions, relationship bad omens, but others are clear red flags that this thang is not gonna work. See what I mean.
Getting a tattoo of your lover’s name…or face
By now it’s no secret that getting a tattoo of your man’s name is risky business. Not only is it a permanent or at least painfully removable reminder of your failed relationship, some even argue that it curses the relationship from the beginning. But you know how it goes, when you’re in it, you’re in it. So if a tattoo feels right in the moment, go for it and actually put the work in to make sure your relationship survives.
Publicly detailing every move in your relationship
If all of your Facebook status updates read like an itinerary of you and your man’s daily activities… If your Instagram looks like the two of you are siamese twins… If your Twitter consists of nothing but tweets talking about how your man is the best and blows your mind… then you might be doing entirely too much. And let me let you in on a little secret, posting incessantly about your relationship actually might indicate that it’s on shaky ground. You know what they say don’t talk about it be about it. If the best parts of your relationships exist on social media, there’s a problem.
Kissing with your eyes open
Personally, I like to watch the facial expressions and see what’s going on during this time but there’s a notion circulating out there that if you can’t kiss a man with your eyes closed, it means that you don’t trust him. And lawd knows if you don’t have trust in a relationship, it’s a struggleship.
Spending too much time with friends
Now, don’t think I say this to mean you’re supposed to abandon your friends once you get into a relationship. What I mean is, if you use your friends as a crutch and find that you rarely spend time alone with your boo, there’s a good chance that you all aren’t as into each other as you think.
Calling Folks Your King/Queen
Ciara— looking at you. When you been dating a man less than a year or so, I personally would refrain from calling a man as a King. It gives a man or a woman too much power too soon. Even if you don’t think you’re worshipping or serving him, words are powerful and using them willy nilly will affect how you see your partner and more importantly how you see yourself in relation to him in the union. Take it easy.
Your partner flirts with people in front of you
Do I really even have to explain this one? There are some people who are natural flirts and their partners know this and don’t mind. But if your partner knows that his or her flirting bothers you, it should stop… like today. And if it doesn’t, it’s an indication that this person doesn’t have too much respect for you.
When he cries after he does wrong, keeps doing wrong… and keeps crying
Hear me well, I have nothing against a man showing real emotion. But “ain’t nobody stupid.” If you shed tears, mess up again and then continue to cry, I’ve peeped game. You either have a problem or you’re an actor. Either way, I can’t help you. And this relationship is in trouble.
Appearing on a reality tv show
I know ya’ll there are some couple who I don’t think will be affected by the reality tv curse. But if your relationship is not solid–like really good, allowing cameras to follow you and your partner around the house, those issues will eventually come up. Let me just give you a short list. There was Jon and Kate Gosselin, Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson, Bethenny Frank and her man, Porsha and Kordell and Mimi and Stevie J. It’s shaky.
All you have is small talk
Have you ever found that when your friends are gone, the television’s off and you’re just sitting around the house that you and your boo thang really don’t have all that much to say to each other? In all fairness, occasional silences are normal and arguably needed. But if you consistently struggle to think of something to talk about beyond the weather, you’re in trouble.
