The causes of sexual dysfunction can be physical or psychological. In some cases, self-diagnosing and at-home treatment is in order. But if you cannot fix the issue yourself, it’s time to see a doctor.

Open communication with your partner will be integral to diagnosing and treating the issue. Before turning to medication or physical treatment, it’s important to rule out psychological or emotional issues. If difficulty emotionally connecting, inadequate foreplay, sexual inhibitions or similar psychological/emotional issues are at the root of your problem, you and your partner can work on that without medical intervention. But you need to be able to talk about it. Sometimes, seeing a therapist together can be useful.

Should you find that the problem is not psychological or emotional, it could be time to involve your doctor. They can run physical tests to determine the problem. From there, they might recommend certain medications or even have you change current medications that may be causing the issue.

Sexual dysfunction doesn’t have to mean the end of a satisfying sex life. Today, there are numerous resources and treatments available that can get you back on track to enjoying physical intimacy.
