Getting your nails done is quite the treat. Who doesn’t love to feel pampered as hands that have been submerged in dishwater, typed on laptops at home, and detangled a head full of hair get massaged, moisturized, and cleaned up? But what regimen do you have for your nails that doesn’t involve a nail tech? When you’re at home, are you regularly clipping and filing your nails, oiling your cuticles, and moisturizing your hands after washing them? If you are as swamped as most people stuck at home during this pandemic, chances are, you’re not giving your nails the tender, love, and care they could use outside of appointments.

ORLY is here to help. The brand just launched a new line called Breathable Treatments. It includes a Breathable Protein Boost ($15), Breathable Calcium Boost ($15), and a Breathable Cuticle Oil ($15). All three work together to help restore and protect your nails.

To learn more about how we can best strengthen our nails in addition to using the treatments, we asked Dr. Jeannette Graf, board-certified dermatologist and Assistant Clinical Professor of Dermatology at Mt. Sinai School of Medicine, to educate us. She shares what breaks down our nails, how the ingredients in the Breathable Treatments help, the best way to maintain our nail health at home, and sets the record straight on to clip or to not clip your cuticles. Find out what she had to say.

What causes brittle nails that break easily?

Dr. Graf says nails that break easily are weakened because they need some moisture.

“Nails become dry and brittle when they lack moisture,” she says. “Many things can strip the moisture in fingernails but the common culprit is washing and drying the hands multiple times a day and frequently using detergents, household cleaners, and nail polish remover.

How does protein help?

Aside from providing moisture, a great way to strengthen brittle nails is to give protein and biotin a try. “Protein helps produce keratin and keratin keeps the nails strong and healthy,’ she says. “Biotin helps strengthen nails as well as promote nail growth.”

A great way to get protein on your nails is through the ORLY Breathable Protein Boost, which is plant-powered. The vegan formula is enriched with jojoba and pea proteins, as well as rooibos leaf and brown algae extracts. These particular ingredients help prevent splitting and peeling of nails and the rooibos leaf and brown algae provide much-needed nourishment. The plant-based protein reduces breakage for your nails as well as improves flexibility.

Why Do Cuticles Dry Out?

Could it be the lack of moisture? The fact that your nails are always in use? What is behind dry cuticles, which can quickly make your nails look like they’re in need of rehabilitation? Dr. Graf says moisturizing cuticles is necessary, and if they’re in really bad shape, you can take additional steps to revive them.

“For the most part cuticles will stay in good shape if you keep them moisturized,” she says. “Continue to apply a lotion or cuticle oil/serum. If you need something more, try sleeping in gloves with lotion in them overnight, and make sure to give your nails a break from the polish here and there.”

ORLY Breathable Cuticle Oil can help with restoring dry cuticles. The oil, with its blend of argan, jojoba, and Vitamin E, helps offer the ultimate hydration. In addition, bergamot and citrus essential oils rejuvenate cuticles while cardamom seed oil is a protectant for skin.

What are the benefits of calcium?

Calcium is a must-have when it comes to strengthening nails, just as it is with strengthening bones. “Calcium can help the nails maintain their hardness by keeping the tissues of the nail bed healthy,” she says. “They will also be less prone to dryness.”

Give your nails the calcium treatment they need with ORLY’s Breathable Calcium Boost. The product helps restore thin, weakened nails. The product offers both strength and moisture thanks to its ingredients. They include vegan calcium, Vitamin B5, Vitamin C, and Argan oil.

What’s the best way to maintain nails at home? And is cuticle trimming really that bad?

During a time when getting dolled up and keeping up with all your beauty regimens is being put on the backburner due to the lack of places to go in the pandemic, Dr. Graf recommends that you at least fit home nail treatments into your schedule for the health of your nails.

“I like Orly’s Breathable Calcium Boost since it has vegan calcium, Vitamin B5, Vitamin C, and Argan Oil made to help nourish dry, damaged, and thin nails,” she says. “I would also recommend ISDIN Si-Nails nail serum as it’s been clinically studied and proven to help strengthen brittle nails by increasing thickness, density, and durability of the nail and cuticle with results in as little as 14 days.”

As for cuticle trimming, whether you’re trying to do it at home by yourself or thinking about agreeing to it at the salon, Dr. Graf says don’t.

“Cuticle trimming can introduce infection into the body as it breaks the barrier that’s protecting the skin in that area,” she says. “If you like the look of trimmed cuticles, try pushing them back instead to avoid potential infection.”
