Celebrities Who Disappointed Us The Most This Year

It’s not that we put celebrities on a higher moral pedestal than the average citizen, it’s that when you have a platform that allows you to influence millions, there’s a certain level of responsibility that comes with that. In other words, there’s just certain sh-t you don’t say and do.
Unfortunately, not all stars got that memo and, as a result, said and did some deplorable things this past year that in many instances are simply unforgiveable. For some of these celebs, we can’t say we expected much more, but that doesn’t make their behavior any less disappointing.

Remy Ma
While we’re absolutely here for Remy Ma’s career resurgence after spending time in prison, what we can’t get behind are her shameful remarks regarding rape victims and R. Kelly on Revolt’s new TV show, “State of the Culture.” During a conversation on Bill Cosby, Remy suggested sexual assault victims are at fault for not speaking up sooner about abuse, saying, “As women, this always underlying ‘I’m scared, I was afraid, I was this..’ I think they are valid. But I think as women, we have a responsibility as well, not just to ourselves, but to other women. Because if I’m violated…I want something to be done.”
Exactly one month later, the rapper shared an equally outrageous explanation for why R. Kelly couldn’t possibly be a sexual predator: “Most rapists don’t eat your ass.” She even went on to blame the parents of the underage girls the singer has been accused of abusing. “I remember that first case with the urination and all that, it was sort of in his defense. I’m not taking either side…How do you combat somebody who likes younger women…What about the parents that are okay with it?”

Kanye West
We tried our best to be sensitive to Kanye’s mental health issues, but when the once beloved (and pro-Black) rapper declared slavery was a choice we had to be done. Lucky for us, he made that choice very easy with all of the follow-up antics, not the least of which included meeting with Donald Trump and proudly prancing around in the paraphernalia that’s come to be the greatest symbol of hate and divide in this country: a red “Make America Great Again” cap.

Nicki Minaj
There seemed to be one downward spiral after another for Nicki Minaj, who beefed with everyone from her ex Safaree to Travis Scott and, of course, Cardi B, this year. But most disappointing was her excusing of the disturbing past of her new boyfriend who is a registered sex offender. “While defending him on Instagram, she said of the attempted rape situation, ‘He was 15, she was 16 … in a relationship. But go awf Internet. Y’all can’t run my life. Y’all can’t even run ya’ll own life.’”

Usher
If only the King of R&B debate had happened earlier in 2018, perhaps Usher would’ve spared himself from tarnishing his legacy with the release of A. The Zaytoven collabo hardly displayed the vocal ability fans know the 40-year-old singer is capable of. And with lyrics like “I don’t do no fugazi,” the album seemed like a desperate attempt for Usher to reclaim his youth.

Tamar Braxton
We know, no surprise here. But the thing about Tamar is she always says she’s going to do better and then, well, she doesn’t. For example, the baby Braxton walked off of the Snoop Dogg stage play she stars in before the second act simply because she was hungry and her food didn’t arrive in time for her to eat it during intermission. She also fessed up to being an actual “PLUM fool” on Braxton Family Values (we’re guessing that goes for all seasons) and swears she’ll do better in 2019. Forgive us if we’re not hopeful.

Yung Miami
Homophobia isn’t just a male rapper problem and Yung Miami is proof of that. The City Girls star landed in hot water this fall over a 2013 tweet in which she said she would beat her son if he was gay. But while the young mother since apologized for her tweet, it doesn’t appear she knows what she actually apologized for, considering she had this to say when she went on The Breakfast Club:
“I didn’t tweet nothing about them [the LGBTQ community]. I was just talking about my son. I just said that if I saw anything gay in my son, that I would beat him. But that’s just like when your mama be like, ‘If you break my table I’m gonna beat the sh-t out of you.’ That don’t mean she’s gonna beat the sh-t out of you, she’s just saying it. I don’t have nothing against gay people but I wouldn’t want my son to be gay just being a mother.”

Salim Akil
Love Is was the OWN TV show viewers thought was the answer to their prayers for more representation of Black love, but it turns out what love actually is is a twisted lie. When the mistress of Salim Akil, who claimed to have co-created the series with his wife Mara, brought a lawsuit forward claiming Salim not only abused her for years throughout their sexual relationship, but also stole the idea for Love Is from her, OWN had no choice but to cancel the series. And in true male fashion, he has yet to say a word about the allegations brought against him, while Mara is mourning the loss of the show and refusing to acknowledge the news reports concerning her husband.

John Gray
When John Gray’s “spirit of a girlfriend” sermon made its rounds on social media (thanks to Ciara), we had no idea that was just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the preacher’s questionable marriage principles. By the time he got around to talking about how his wife had to birth his grown a– early in their relationship, we realized he was yet another misogynist who loves to tell women what their place is while refusing to hold men accountable for the pain they put her through. Oh, and did we mention he met with Donald Trump to accomplish absolutely nothing? His appetite for attention knows no limits.

Kevin Hart
If we’re being honest, Kevin Hart never really got off of our sh-t list after that blackmail-cheating fiasco in 2017, mostly because for years he was so adamant about the public just not wanting to see him happy even though he was clearly doing dirt. In 2018, we learned the comedian’s indignation knows no limits when, instead of take responsibility for the insensitive Cowboys and Indians party he and Eniko had for their son’s first birthday, he pointed out that the Cowboys played the Redskins on TV that day. And when the Academy asked him to apologize for homophobic “jokes” he made in the past, Hart chose, instead, to bow out of hosting the Oscars altogether.
