(Wall Street Journal) — Tax troubles facing the proposed buyer of Washington’s Love nightclub, where such big names as Beyonce and Jay-Z have performed, remain a sticking point to $7.8 million deal. Would-be buyer Dean Smothers’s failure to comply with Washington tax laws at his nightclub, The Scene, are one of the reasons cited by the District of Columbia’s attorney general in his objection to the sale. A Washington bankruptcy judge will consider approving the deal Tuesday. “It is the policy of the District not to transfer a liquor license to an applicant who has tax problems with the city, and therefore, does not have clean hands,” said Peter J. Nickles, the attorney general, in court papers filed Friday.
