Blue eyeshadow has and always will be a love it or hate it type of conversation. I’ve never met a woman on the fence about the trend. Ask a woman if she likes red lipstick or blue eyeshadow, and you’re bound to get a firm yes or no. But lately, we’ve been seeing some true blue eyeshadow action in the beauty world.

My newfound love for blue-colored lids began with Pat McGrath’s 2017 Dark Star 006 launch. One of the kits featured a rich, royal blue, heavily metallic yet lightweight formulated eyeshadow that I’m still in love with and I think you might just find yourself falling in love with the trend too.

Shadows are one of the easiest ways to dip your toe into the world of bold eye makeup without going too far into the deep end. While some women yearn to learn how to wear eyeshadow in general, others just want to spice things up a bit. The hesitancy seems to creep in, though, when women attempt to “accurately” apply their shadows. Some even expect to create a perfected blend or cut-crease on their first try. But you don’t have to overthink this beauty trend, just have fun.

My point is that there is really no right or wrong way to wear eyeshadow anymore, and that same rule applies to summer’s hottest trend: bold blue eyes. Below are my quick tips and tricks to effortlessly rocking blue eyeshadow this season.

  • DO start with an eyeliner pencil if you’re too afraid to use eyeshadow

It’s perfectly fine to pick up a few affordable eyeliners and test colors and different sizes of pencils. You shouldn’t feel any less of a woman for not knowing how to put on eyeliner; it can be hard. But, practice makes perfect. My suggestion is to start from the outer corners of your eyes, on the bottom lid, and gently work your way towards the center of your lid. This will teach you how to get the hang of lining your eyes if you aren’t comfortable doing so yet. Why the bottom? I find it’s easier to line the bottom of your eyes than the top.

  • DON’T spend a lot of money on shadows

The thing is, there are some shadows that have much longer lasting wear and even textures than others. But for the most part, I say keep it under $10 if you can. Splurge on beautiful colors that inspire you or that you’d love to try, but keep the basics (the blues, blacks, and even purples) in the affordable family.

  • DO add gloss for edge

One of my favorite go-to looks over the last few months has been the super glossy lid. I love using Milk Makeup’s Eye Vinyl in Nude on top of my Pat McGrath 006 Ultraviolet pigment.  It’s an easy way to add edge to your look without knowing what you’re actually doing.

  • DON’T try to be perfect

Like I mentioned before, have fun not knowing what you’re doing. The new rule of eyeshadow is that there aren’t any. Whether you feel comfortable just dabbing your middle finger in your shadow and lightly tapping it over your lids or you’re ready for the blue-smoky eye look, go at your own pace.
