Sure, we all know the major black republicans like Allen West, Artur Davisand Clarence Thomas. But some famous faces have managed to slip under the radar when it comes to their affiliation with the GOP. Even though the party’s presidential candidate, Mitt Romney, is capturing zero percent of the black vote, there are still a number of African Americans who align themselves with the Republicans.

I use think all rich people were republicans.

  • FromUR2UB

The only contemporary one I found surprising was LL Cool J. I’m not sure what to make of that.

  • Gimmeabreak78

I wouldn’t care if the Rock was a card-carrying member of the Tea Party. Fine is fine, no matter how it votes.

  • Treacle234

This list has soo many issues. Please do some more research and re-post.

I saw the list, but I have one major problem with it, especially concerning the historical examples such as Sojourner Truth, Harriet Tubman, etc. The Republican Party as we know it today was not the Republican Party of 150 years ago. For a long time, the Republican Party had a strong anti-slavery platform. Many of the Northern reformers that traveled to the South during Reconstruction were Republicans as well. On the other hand, the Democrats, which were largely based in the South, were very much pro-slavery. The reason why many African-Americans voted Republican (and rejected Democrats) was because of the party’s ties to abolition and equal rights for Blacks. When FDR (a Democrat) was elected President, the goals and makeup of the parties started to shift. Many African-Americans voted for him because they felt that the goals of his presidency were more in line with what they wanted. Following FDR, one started to see how the Republican Party developed into what it is today, with them moving away from the equal rights platform and more towards conservatism (although you still had racist Southern Democrats). Perhaps a better title for the article would be “Conservative Black Celebrities”. Whew!

I’m not sure if you read the article carefully, but the author was careful to note that the modern-day Republican Party bears no resemblance to the one Truth, Tubman, and others supported.

      • A.J.

Yes, I noticed that, and I’m glad that the author made that distinction. However, there are still some people who don’t understand the differentiation. Then you have Booker T. Washington, whose views actually do/did correspond with that of the modern-day Republicans.

To your point, I will say that the slide show of the Black Republicans the author listed was improperly called “Right-Wing”. True, Sojourner Truth and others were Black Republicans, but the GOP of the antebellum until the CRM was definitely progressive and cannot be accurately described as right-wing.

AJ, love your comments! I live in Michigan and I hate it when Republicans brag that the Republican party was founded here, although it was, actually. The Republican party of the mid 19th century was founded to unite the abolitionists. None of today’s Republicans would find anything to like about its platform!

    • Mytisque

I learned in a History class last year that some slaves voted Republican back in the days of slavery.

        Slaves weren’t allowed to vote.
