Six months after losing the Senate bid, Barbara Lee has secured her new role for the next four years. She made history on May 20 by becoming the first Black woman elected to serve as the mayor of Oakland, California. Sworn in as the 52nd mayor, she came prepared with her agenda for the next few years.
During her time in California’s legislature, Barbara Lee built an impressive record of fighting for social justice, economic equality, and civil rights. Some of her efforts include saving 25 million lives by driving HIV/AIDS initiatives working with former President George W. Bush and drafting a passage for the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief.
Democrats are struggling to see the good in a plan that continues large tax breaks to the wealthy.
