The recessionista really does exist! She lives in every city and town in this country. Don’t believe us? Check out this slideshow of pieces she uses to spruce up her look… no faux designer purses necessary!
1. Belts that create a high-waisted look
They say fashion repeats itself, but some things are just classic. Buy belts with a short width to wrap around large shirts or dresses. It adds definition to your curves while tailoring your look.
2. Antique jewelry passed down or from a thrift store
Old jewelry is a great way to subtlety add to any outfit. Look through grandmothers jewelry box for chunky bracelets, unique broaches and decorative earrings. Thrift stores like The Salvation Army also have tons of pieces that look great and tell a story.
3. Black pants or opaque’s with black heels
Even for the summer this look works. Black, the most forgiving color, thins out the leg and makes a Hot silhouette with the right black pump. This look goes great with short skirts and even shorts.
4. Strategically placed scarf
Scarves can be difficult. It’s hard to figure out where to put them to not look random with the rest of your ensemble. For the summer, they look great tied around the head bohemian style. They also can works as a pseudo belt for a summer dress.
5. Hair accessories (headband, funky hats, or pin ups)
Fedoras aren’t the only thing that jazz up a look. For natural hair, head bands are a feminine way to hold back your curls and show your style. Along with headbands and hats, pinning a decorated comb or broach is a different way to spruce up for a night out.
6. Stunner Shades
Strolling through the Saks and Neiman’s of the world, its always comforting to know that there’s a better deal somewhere else. In D.C. Annie Cream Cheese is a great place for shades. In NYC, try Beacons Closet . And if anywhere else, good ole Target has fab glasses for under $17.
7. Glowing Skin
You laughed at grandma for always having a bottle of Vaseline around to keep from being ashy, but what you don’t know is, it’s actually a great way to get glowing skin. If you find Vaseline to greasy, try Skin So Soft’s Body Oil or Jergens Natural Glow lotion.
8. Pedicured Toes
Picture it: There’s sun, a clear ocean, a fine cabana man and a cool margarita waiting for you. You look down and see…busted toes. Don’t make the mistake of not cutting your nails and polishing them up a bit, before you whip out the sandals.
9. Eyebrow shaping
While many wax or pluck, Indians have brought a great method to the states. Threading consists of twisting a piece of thread into a double strand to remove hair, creating a precise hairline. Whichever way works for you, shaping your eyebrows does wonders for the face!
10. Summer kicks
Natives are a great, classic summer shoe with a twist. Made in a variety of colors, they all come in slip-on styles made of a super lightweight material.
