When your job hired you they were more interested in your capabilities and less in your ego. No one says you can’t have confidence but there is such a thing as going overboard. It’s time to take a hard look at yourself and ask if your pride is getting in the way of your success.

There’s always time to change.

Won’t take a job beneath you

If you’re currently unemployed you might want to consider a job opportunity in efforts to pay your bills. Sure it might not be the ideal situation, but sometimes you have to do what’s necessary in order to do what you’d like. Whether you’re starting over or want to change careers, don’t get into the habit of brushing off a job because it’s “beneath you.”

Fail to see the error of your ways

This folks is how mistakes are made.

When you think you’re so perfect it becomes hard to see the mistakes you make. Everyone at some point will mess something up, but you might not get any sympathy if you come off arrogant.

Overstep boundaries

You might want to be careful how quick you are to bark out orders–especially at your boss. Pride can make you think you know everything and also overstep boundaries. Kudos to you for wanting to take on a management role, but please know your place.

Don’t accept responsibility

“I didn’t mess that up, she did.”

Sometimes all a situation takes is a person owning up to what they did (or their part) and finding a solution. Failure to accept responsibility shows your colleagues you lack an element of professionalism… and maturity.

Can’t work well with others

“They just don’t get it. How did they even get this job?”

The Omarosa spirit is alive and well around the workplace. Pride makes it difficult to work with others as you think you know everything. People bring a company success–and if one person could do it on their own there would be no need for employees.

Take on too much

Just admit you need help.

There are some people who would rather take on more work than they can handle instead of get someone to assist them. There’s no such thing as a superhero—and if you try to become one you run the risk of making a mistake (or two).

Are less engaging

“People need to come talk to me. I’m too busy.”

You’ll find it very difficult to develop business relationships with a cold demeanor. No one says you have to be super close to your co-workers, but at the very least, try to be somewhat engaging.

Constantly put down others to make yourself better

What does it say about your self-esteem if you need to belittle others in order to make yourself feel better? There’s is enough room for everyone at the table of success. You don’t need to sabotage or make another person feel bad in order to climb the corporate ladder.

Turn off your co-workers

It’s a good idea to start making your amends now in fear you’ll turn off your co-workers. No one enjoys being around a prideful person who only thinks about themselves and not the bigger picture. This could limit your chances of promotion should your boss feel you’re ill-equipped.
