These celebrities thought their reality shows were going to be their ticket to stardom or at least a career revival. But this time the exposure didn’t work in their favor. Is reality TV really a career killer? Or should we wait for these Hollywood hopefuls to bounce back?
Karlie Redd
Love and Hip Hop star Karlie Redd thought that her stint on reality TV would open industry doors. But when she went to audition for a Tyler Perry movie, they told her that no reality stars need apply. And Karlie Redd says it’s not the first time that this has happened:
“There’s been roles that I auditioned for and then they found out…literally I’m on my way to set to work, got the role and everything and then they find out I’m on the show and then they’re like, ‘Uh, no.’”
Kelly Price
Did “R&B Divas” writers create the monster that ruined Kelly Prices career? Kelly Price says that being misrepresented on “R&B Divas” as a “crazy bully” drove a lot of her fans away. Now Kelly Price is off of reality TV and back in the studio to try and win back her fan base before it’s too late.
Chad Johnson
Not every personality type is well-suited for TV. Former Cincinnati Bengals player Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson failed to take his temper into consideration when he dated “Basketball Wives” star Evelyn Lozada on camera. The two got married, Ochocinco was arrested for domestic violence and now he’s out of the NFL altogether and playing for the Montreal Alouettes.
Paris Hilton
After her sex tape and reality TV show made her America’s most famous socialite, the family patriarch Barron Hilton cut Paris and her family off from the $4.5 billion they were set to inherit. That’s a big price to pay for 15 minutes of fame.
David Otunga
Before David Otunga appeared on “I Love New York” he was Harvard Law graduate working at one of the country’s biggest law firms. Now he’s out of the law firm and into the wrestling arena. But he is engaged to Jennifer Hudson, so life can’t be all bad. Except we’re not sure they’re ever gonna jump the broom.
Heidi Montag
Several seasons on “The Hills” did a number on Heidi Montag’s self-esteem. And in 2010, she shocked the world when she hit the red carpet after receiving 10 plastic surgery procedures in one day. Heidi now hates the way she looks and told “Life and Style,” “Surgery ruined my career and my personal life and just brought a lot of negativity into my world. I wish I could jump into a time machine and take it all back. Instead, I’m always going to feel like Edward Scissorhands.”
Apollo Nida
When Apollo Nida was sentenced to prison, U.S. Secret Service Special Agent Reginald Moore told CNN.com, “Today’s sentencing exemplifies impartial justice regardless of economic class or perceived celebrity status.” And that makes us wonder if Apollo’s reality TV celebrity status helped to highlight his illegal activities. Now the former “Real Housewives of Atlanta” star is preparing to spend eight years behind bars.
Lamar Odom
Do you think Lamar Odom wishes he’d never shown up on reality TV? We don’t know if his time on “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” was the cause of Lamar Odom’s downward spiral, but it’s undeniable that his professional and personal life have been suffering ever since. Once upon a time he was the NBA Sixth Man of the Year. Now he’s divorced, recovering from drug addiction and playing for Saski Baskonia in Spain.
Kanye West
Do you think “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” has the power to take down Kanye West? Some of Kanye’s former fans say that they were turned off by the stars’ overexposure. And more than one person has suggested that a little time out of the spotlight could be good for Kanye’s career.
