When I came up with the topic for today’s question: Did an creepy, older man tell you that you had blossomed, I thought about my own experience of an inappropriate, older man telling me, at around 10 or 11 years old, that my a$$ was fat. I remember thinking at that moment that something had changed. Men wouldn’t see me as a little girl anymore. And even though I spent much of my childhood trying to be grown, I didn’t realize that for a lot of men, a woman is nothing more than a sex object. I knew that I surely wasn’t alone in this experience but I didn’t realize, until I was reading your stories how prevalent this issue is and how as one reader put it, referencing The Color Purple: “A girl child ain’t safe in a family of men.”
Sharai: Of course! there was always a creepy old man like that. it made me feel disgusting and extremely self conscious.
Sharon: Yeah…he was the son of the woman that used to keep/babysit us….the same creepy bastard that snuck in my room at night. He said a lot. Done a lot. May his creepy A$$ rest in pieces 🙂
Deva: Yes and I really didn’t think much of it then, but then I realized my husband became that creepy old man to my daughters’ friends and the that’s when it all iof sudden hit me—ugggghghgh!!
Jasmine: He told me I got my ‘lumps’ and smiled at me. I tried taping em down for a week str8!
Ashley: Just that…that I have blossomed and I’m stacked now… ummm what?? I now have a daughter and I get protective just hearing a man say she is beautiful.
Portia: Extremely uncomfortable and cautious.
Veronica: Walking home from the Chinese restaurant, this old man said “I didn’t know Chinese food can make your tits grow like that” Being 13 & already wearing a 34C, I was mortified!
Kym: My pastor Rev. Polk told me during Easter service..doesn’t get much creepier than that.. I spent my entire high school career with a sweater, sweatshirt or cardigan wrapped around my waist trying to hide what he ogled in church
Shelley: I was 14 working for my Mommy’s friend. That ole bastard came behind me and grabbed my breasts. I was hurt and felt sooo dirty, wondering what I did to deserve that…told Mommy and she spoke with him but I didn’t want to work there anymore. When I was 16 guests were having dinner with us..and another ole bastard kept looking googley eyes at me. Well.I cussed him out right at the dinner table. My father didn’t look up. Mommy said just go upstairs. Dinner was over for everybody. I HATE OLE AZZ men..to this day !!!!
Pamela: One day walking home from the bus stop after getting out of school (I was in the 7th grade) this old neighborhood creep hollered out, “I know you is Chocolate’s daughter (my mom’s nickname) ’cause you look just like her. You got big just like her too.”
I took off running embarrassed and ashamed. I never liked my huge breasts. I don’t have them anymore after going through a double mastectomy due to breast cancer.
Ericka: It was a man at my middle school…a teacher assistant who always said he wanted to see me in my bikini
Raya: Yup! There was a dirty old man near my JHS, he said to me “come let me touch that Kitty” I said I am telling my dad he said I am your daddy. My daddy came to school at lunchtime and said show me that mammyfucker!!! Pops had the.metal pipe in a paper bag and bust him in the head!!! I never saw that man again!!!
Adria: It was my godfather. He didn’t say anything but he looked at me like I was a piece of meat. I felt like I had been molested. I told my godmother I never wanted to see or hear from him again. Just let me know when he was dead.
Yvette: This guy in the next building gave me the flowers he bought for his wife and kissed me on my cheek- I wasn’t even 12 yet. Kept telling me my legs were nice. I never saw him again… Ever…
Reena: This creepy, old man did more than just tell me that I blossomed… He wrote me a letter telling me how he loved me since I was about 10 years old and hoped that we could be together one day. He even mentioned in detail one of the dresses I wore at that age!! My family confronted him and last I heard, he moved out of state somewhere.
Roni: I was skateboarding around the apartment building where my grandmother lived. There were a group of adults out talking and this one man said to me, “How old are you?” I said 12. Then he said, “Come and see me in 6 more years.” The other adults, men and women, started laughing. I kept skateboarding, but I figured out in my head that in 6 more years, I would be 18. The comment confused me. I didn’t know at the time that the comment was inappropriate, but for some reason, I felt uncomfortable and I’ve never forgotten it.
Jessica: A minister at my grandmother’s church used to tell me I filled out nicely. I was 8. I’m 39 now and I saw him over the Christmas holiday. He got an earful. I don’t care if it was 30 years later.
Michele: Yep my friend’s father. He said did I get my period yet. And I said did your daughter
Sylvia: He lived in the building next door. He bought me candy and would give my mom money to buy my Easter outfit. As I got older, he would give me money to buy sweet treats from the neighborhood store. I called him Uncle Bill and thought he was so nice. When I was about 12 yrs he asked me for a kiss and I told my mom. She went off on him and told him she would kill him if he ever even looked my way again. Needless to say, shortly after that he moved and I never saw him again…
Carol: A male neighbor{40} invited me {12} to his house to be alone, started wearing baggy clothes for several years.
Nicole: I didn’t hear it myself, but one day my father and his friend were outside , then the next thing you know my daddy was beating him down. My mother made us stay inside while the next door neighbor broke up the fight. Sometime later my cousin told me that John, my dads friend had made a ‘blossoming” comment about me… I think I was like 10 or 11… I never saw him again..
Brenda: I remember I was about 8 or 9 yrs old, and an after school coach whom had to be in his either late teens or early 20s blew kisses at me and lifted his shirt flashing his chest… it made me so uncomfortable and extremely disgusted with older men for years…
Tashina: I was in fourth grade and got bit by a bug on my chest that hung on. I told my teacher (male) about it and he put his hand down my shirt and grabbed it. Then said “you guys are really growing up.” I felt so violated and dirty like I had done something wrong.
Rahel: Well I was almost kidnapped as a kid, so I won’t go there but my screams stopped my aggressor. The world is a dangerous place for minors.
