This husband and wife sure know how to keep things playful in their marriage.
An X user named @JoyyUnSpeakable left the internet in suspense when she shared a letter from her husband, Fred, on Oct. 22. Joyy, an entrepreneur and artist, expressed her nerves upon receiving the letter, which was addressed “To my wife” on the front of the envelope. Inside, Fred revealed something that had been weighing on his mind for some time, but it wasn’t what anyone expected.
“Tonight, October 22, 2024, marks opening night for the New York Knicks 24-25 season,” the letter read. “I will be watching the game tonight.”
Many expected Fred to announce something troubling about their marriage, such as infidelity or a desire for divorce. However, the devoted husband had a different agenda in mind for game day. He declared that from 7 p.m. until the game ended, he would “not be a husband or father,” during the Knicks game. Fred wrote, “Y’all are on your own for a couple of hours.”
To make his game day truly epic, Fred announced that he wouldn’t be watching his favorite TV shows with his wife, taking the dog out, or putting their child to bed. “I will sit on my couch, drink in hand and I will watch the game. That’s it,” he penned. “This doesn’t mean I love you guys any less. It just means tonight is not about y’all. It’s about ruining the Boston Celtics ring ceremony,” he reassured Joyy. “The rest of the season is negotiable up until the point in time we reach the playoffs. Then I will have to abandon y’all again temporarily,” he added.

Fred’s request was understandable as it’s important for husbands to have free time for several reasons. First, personal time allows them to recharge and de-stress, helping to prevent burnout from the demands of work and family life. This time away can enhance their overall well-being, leading to improved mental health and a more positive outlook, The Relationship Place notes.
Additionally, having free time encourages personal growth and hobbies, which can contribute to a more fulfilling life. Pursuing interests outside of family responsibilities fosters a sense of individuality and identity, strengthening their overall sense of self.
Here was Joyy’s reaction.
Joyy was able to breathe a sigh of relief after she read the whole message and jokingly captioned the post, “Ladies … choose yourself. I woke up to this nonsense after almost 11 years of marriage.” In a follow-up post she added, “I won’t even lie … he had me nervous at first, then I laughed so hard … this made my morning.”
She also sent a text to her husband, joking about the hilarious letter. “I gave you almost 12 years of my life just for you to leave me a letter like that???” to which he responded, “I had to be true to myself!!! Even if it hurt.”
In the end, Joyy and her children joined Fred to watch the Knicks game after all. “He picked up food and ice cream on his way home from work. I’m on the couch talking to him while the game is on. I hope he don’t leave me,” she penned, while also sharing a video that captured her enjoying the game with Fred and her son. She also has a special surprise in store for her hubby next month.
“I meant to tell y’all I paid for my husband to see a Knicks game in Charlotte for his birthday next month,” she revealed. “Yes I’m a stay at home mom but content creation has been pretty good to me.”
Social media lit up with reactions to the funny post.
“I was nervous for you!” wrote one X user.
Another person penned, “Ngl, I thought he was trying to come out of the closet.”
One netizen on X praised Joyy for acknowledging and respecting her husband’s needs.
“You know what? This is actually fantastic. Open and clear communication over something that’s important to him. People in relationships are allowed their alone time. He’s communicating his needs ahead of time clearly and with lots of reassurance. I genuinely love this,” the fan penned. “This post was the best!”
