Being Nice Vs. Being Kind, There’s A Difference And It Matters

Giving Praise Where It Isn’t Earned

It can be tough to tell someone they did a poor job on something. Maybe your kid could have done a better job on their homework, your assistant could have handled a task better or your friend’s manuscript could use some work before going to publishing. The nice thing to do is to tell them they did a great job. It makes them, and you, feel good in the moment. But ultimately, you don’t help people when you give praise where constructive feedback was needed. The kind thing to do is find a gentle, constructive way to tell them how to improve. That’s what’s best for them in the long run. So even if it feels uncomfortable to do, it’s the kind thing to do.
