Having a favorite
The signature of a toxic parent is one who shows favoritism. Children have a keen sense of fairness and can easily pick up when one child is being treated differently than the rest. These parents will typically make one child out to be the scapegoat who can do nothing right and another to be the golden child who can do no wrong. Further, favoritism has been shown to negatively affect both the golden child and the favorite long term.
