He may be at that learning age
Depending on how old this man is, he may be just around that age of learning what he wants in a partner and how to be a good partner. I would say late twenties or early thirties is when this happens for men. So if you meet a guy at age, say, 28, he may still have some old, selfish habits. So you dump him. But then, he realizes around age 30 or 32 the errors of his ways and can actually fix them.
