Miguel Moves and Grooves Us During “Fashion Night Out”
New York City on September 8 = CHAOS! Fashionable chaos though…
If you were anywhere near NYC, I’m sure you noticed the swarm of interestingly and well-dressed individuals clopping back and forth in designer heels and name-brand sneakers, standing in lines or running through the streets from boutique to boutique. It was Fashion Night Out ’round these parts, and people were definitely dressed to the nines and ready for it. And while most big name musicians and celebrities were goofing around and shopping it up in big department stores and boutiques, singer Miguel was doing an intimate performance for us at Cappellini, the design store in SoHo.
Like most places, it was packed…and it was LOUD. But when the singer came on stage, bedecked in some large angular shades and rocking a snapback cap and clothes that were uber-colorful and eclectic by Copperwheat (think Will Smith’s “Fresh Prince” style of attire in the early ’90s), all eyes were on him. Oh yeah, and on his glow-in-the-dark microphone stand too. Miguel went through restructured, acoustic versions of hits from his album “All I Want is You” (like “Sure Thing, “All I Want is You” and even interludes like “Girl with the Tattoo”), with guests, drinks in hand, cameras in the other, singing along off-key. The songs and his performance were all the more impressive because he was actually the one playing the guitar during the show. After a while, he left the guitar behind and just sang “broke it down like a crippled clown” (as my friend Veronica would say). That man is talented! And that voice! The texture of his vocals was like silk as his voice bounced off the red walls of the store’s chic decor. While I could have done without all the overly-dressed people standing in my personal space (in painfully tall stilettos) and talking at speakerphone volume, I was more than glad to have been in the presence of Miguel’s voice and talent last night. He definitely turned Fashion Night Out!
