I Didn’t Know I Was Pregnant… Seriously?

June 24th, 2011 - By Toya Sharee

“Takeout Tike” was the first episode that I ever caught of Discovery Health’s I Didn’t Know I Was Pregnant.  The episode told the story of fast-food restaurant manager, Danille who assumed her sick-like symptoms were due to a case of the flu. She ends up giving birth in a bathroom stall of the restaurant later on in the day with the assistance of a 16 year-old co-worker.  Strangely, Danille was already the mother of three children.  How could she not know?  I seriously found it hard to believe that the women who appeared on this show could carry a full pregnancy without the slightest suspicion.  Is it denial or a legitimate case of oversight?

Danille’s story is not as uncommon as you may think as evidenced by the many stories that appear on the show.  Many women who are regularly sexually active assume that consistent and correct use of a birth control method will guarantee that they will not become pregnant.  Depending on the type of contraception you are using, you can certainly decrease your chances of becoming pregnant, but the only way to completely eliminate the possibility is through abstinence.  Pregnancies have even been proven to occur when more permanent solutions have been sought such as tubal ligation. What can I say: The uterus wants what the uterus wants.

Purchasing a pregnancy test every time you feel the slightest bit nauseous can become costly so most women look to their period as a sign that they haven’t become pregnant. But what happens when your period isn’t regular to begin with?  Previous pregnancy symptoms aren’t always the best guide as proven in Danille’s case, since every pregnancy is different.  And it’s understandable how many women who are already burdened with busy schedules and stress could dismiss mild pregnancy symptoms and even the occasional missed period.  Convinced it can’t happen to you?  Can you relate to any of the reasons listed below that these women used to explain their misconceived conception?

I don't care what anyone says…nothing…NOTHING at all feels the same as a baby moving around inside of you. When I was pregnant with my first child, I was 17. I was in DENIAL up until my 5th month…when I could see and feel my baby's foot/elbow/hand move across my stomach. Yeah, it feels like butterflies at first, but once the baby starts growing, you feel like you're getting your a*s kicked from the inside out.

Exactly!!! I don't believe you can go through a whole nine months and not feel a foot or elbow kicking you in the gut. I have never heard of a healthy baby not giving a few of these during the pregnancy!!

You would think that as liberal as California claims to be insurance companies would cover pregnant women but they don’t. Instead the state came out with a program called healthy families that covers women whose families make too much for medi cal but who didn’t have insurance otherwise. It has sliding scale premiums based on income and copays are about $10

  • Theworldjustkeepsonturnin

@nursedred actually insurance companies aren’t allowed to deny coverage for pregnancy as a pre-existing condition. I’ve worked on the insurance industry for most of the last 10yrs and to the best of my knowledge pregnancy is not considered a pre-existing condition. At least not in Michigan.

@barberlady I don’t think no insurance is a factor since all states offer free Medicaid for pregnant women. No other insurance will touch them since pregnancy is a preexisting condition and if you make too much money for Medicaid or medi Cal depending on the state then there’s a ton of low cost government aid to cover you for the prenatal and after care. Help is there you just have to ask for it

I also saw this show a couple of nights ago. One woman never missed a period and only gained 5 pounds during her pregnancy. If you're still having periods, why would you think you were pregnant?? I was told that if you are bleeding, you are not pregnant. Now, if you miss your period, you should at least consider that you might be pregnant, and see a doctor.

My cousin didn't find out she was pregnant until she went into Labor. She was already a big girl so the wieght gain went unnoticed. She says she thought she had gas all that time, guess she was wrong.

I can believe it I’m five months pregnant with my first child and I don’t even look pregnant I’ve barely gained weight. I wouldn’t believe I was pregnant if it wasn’t for the ultrasound.

^^^ not to discredit Jennies account at all. #15 should have been “Being a clueless child who’s never experienced a pregnancy and may not have the frame of reference to know what’s happening to her.”

  • TheBarberLady

With the exception of #s 6 & 8, it still seems that there would have to be the perfect storm of all these symptoms in order to not understand that you should at least see a dr.!! Suffering only one of these issues with the pregnancy progressing normally should not render one clueless that something is going on with your body. Now why wasn’t # 13 on the list….No Insurance!!!! You may suspect a pregnancy but fear of another bill you can’t pay keeps you from going to the dr. Leading # 14: Denial!!!!!!

One of my mom's friends said when she was pregnant with her first child she didn't know. She was a cheerleader and was almost 8 months when she started to show. Her breasts didn't get any bigger, she didn't miss a period, no weird cravings or morning sickness. She said she cheered at every football and basketball game with cartwheels and all. She said all of sudden, like overnight, she began to show and feeling nauseous at her 8th month. So, yeah, I believe it.
When i was pregnant the first time I was 8 weeks before I knew, and that was only because I took an EPT. Wasn't showing, no weight changes, no queeziness, nothing. And two days after my doctors appointment the folling week, the symptoms started showing up. Sore boobs, one day of nausea, and my belly grew from nothing overnight.
