Ironically, a successful woman <em>can </em>provide for her kids in many ways—if that’s what her partner was looking for. A successful mom can pay for childcare, and for things like ballet lessons and that expensive prep school. But, to the chauvinistic man, that’s not what it’s about—he wants his partner in the trenches with the diapers.

In business meetings—designated for business—we are expected to do a lot of pleasantries (how was your vacation? You like your new neighborhood? Oh yes, these smoothies are great etc etc) before we can dive into business. If we get straight to business, we’re accused of being cold and rude. Men are not held to that same standard.

People will always accuse you of coddling other women, and allowing certain mistakes to slide with females that you wouldn’t allow to slide with men. Maybe those people are right, but considering history, maybe women deserve a little coddling in the workplace to compensate for all the terrors they face.

Because you have had to be very upfront, straightforward and—yes—abrasive to get where you are, you can accidentally carry those traits over to your romantic relationships and frighten your partner. You have to remember to couch things and say them more lovingly sometimes.
