Ladies, there’s a new birth control in town. It’s called Kyleena, and it was recently approved for release in October. If you’re thinking about doing something different when it comes to your contraception, or just want to know what Kyleena is, we’ve got you covered.
When it comes to birth control, women can never have too many options, and it pays to learn all there is to know about them all. The good news? This new form of contraception is meant to be, according to The Huffington Post, “the first device of its kind meant to offer long-lasting contraception to women who have never been pregnant.” The not-so-good news? Kyleena can cost around $500 to $900 to insert if you don’t have insurance. But if you do have insurance, it might be covered in full.
It’s an IUD
That’s short for intrauterine device. It’s tiny, T-shaped and a gynecologist inserts it into your uterus where it keeps eggs from releasing or growing.
You Can Use It Even If You’ve Never Been Pregnant
It’s one of Kyleena’s biggest benefits.

Once upon a time, IUDs like Kyleena were only for women who didn’t want any more children because they might cause infertility.
Kyleena doesn’t pose this risk, and you can get pregnant as soon as your first period after you have it removed. In fact, 71 percent of women who tried got pregnant within the first year after taking it out.
It Lasts for Five Years
That means no worrying about birth control for half a decade after you pop it in.
It Has the Lowest Dose on the Market
Because it releases a lower dose of hormones that means it has fewer side effects than other IUDs.
But There Are Some Side Effects
No birth control runs zero risk of side effects. Possible effects, which are rare, include bleeding, pelvic pain, and risk of ectopic pregnancy. It’s best to talk to your doctor about the risks of any birth control before you choose it.
It Will Lighten Your Period
But it won’t stop it completely. Because Kyleena releases a low dose of hormones, you’ll still have a monthly visitor. The lower hormone dose also means it may not be a great choice for women with very heavy periods looking to birth control for a little relief.
It’s One of the Most Effective Forms of Birth Control
That’s because once Kyleena is inserted, there’s no way to use it wrong. IUDs are designed to sit tight in place and do their job.
They’ve done the trials and your risk of getting pregnant with Kyleena is around .023% making it over 99.9 percent effective.

It’s Great for Curvy Women
The bigger your curves, the faster your metabolism works, which may make the pill or even the patch slightly less effective.
Because of the way IUDs like Kyleena deliver birth control, they can be a better option for women of all sizes.
You Will Still Need to Use a Condom
As effective as Kyleena is, it does not protect you against sexually transmitted infections.
It’s Not for Everyone
Kyleena is great, but not all women can use it. If you’ve had a history of any of these health problems, bring them up with your doctor when you ask about Kyleena. This form of birth control may not be the right fit for you.
