Love and respect are two different things. Unfortunately, when the respect leaves a relationship, feelings can follow right behind them. Whether it’s his job, his behavior, or differing viewpoints, sometimes you wake up and realize that you don’t feel the same way about one another.

But if the love is still there, what do you do? You make an effort, that’s what you do.

If you’re not ready for the relationship to be over, there are ways to start to regain the respect you once had for your partner. If he’s worth the work, trying to see him in a different light might help you fix what’s broken.

Take His Advice

The next time he offers up an opinion (even if you secretly feel that your way is better), take his advice and follow it through.

When it’s good advice, it’s a great reminder that he’s better than you thought at taking the lead from time to time.

Lower Your Voice

Sometimes volume is just the way we get a point across. But if the volume (or subject matter) at home is getting reckless, you might have to be the one to start bringing the volume down.

Make an effort to bring calm back into the house, and you can get back to the copacetic conversations that brought you together in the first place.

Find out Why He Does What He Does

If it’s on your nerves so much it makes you feel differently about him, ask him why he does whatever it is that bothers you, and let him know how it makes you feel. You might come to a better understanding or he might finally have a good reason to stop.

Take “No” for an Answer

Some of us want a man to take more control but have trouble giving it up. If you want him to take more of a leadership role, make it a point to follow him sometimes. It might be the nudge he needs.

Watch Him Do Something He’s Good At

It might remind you of the qualities that made you fall in love with him in the first place. He may even restore your faith in the hobby he believes will make him successful.

Stop Throwing Shade With Your Friends

Everyone wants to vent. But if you have a habit of trashing him during Sunday brunch, it might be harder to shake it off by Monday’s date night.

Tell Your Loved Ones to Pipe Down

Whether it’s your mom, dad, favorite aunt or co-worker who makes it clear that they don’t respect or like your significant other (and you disagree), it’s time for a sit-down.

Tell them that you hear them. You know how they feel and you won’t forget it. However, you would appreciate it if they could stop making him the topic of conversation while you’re trying to work things out.

Stop Telling Him How You Feel

Honesty is important in a relationship — to a point. If things are rough, it might be time to table criticisms for a while. Write it down, let it go, or take a walk when his behavior is near your last nerve.

Skipping arguments can help you keep your relationship conversations positive by leaving more time to talk about the good things instead of the bad.

Tell Him Everything Else

Sharing your feelings about love, insecurity and trust can bring you closer. Give him a chance to give you support when you need it or listen when you ask and he might surprise you.

Review Your Standards

Every woman has to ask herself, “What really makes a good man and an even better relationship?” Trim your list down to five of the most important things. If he’s not meeting the important standards, ask yourself how he could (while keeping in mind that he might not be able to change).

Remind Yourself What It Is That You Love About Him

Make this list as long as you like. You might find that the positives outweigh the negatives.

Ask Yourself What He Might Not Love About You

No one is perfect. Reminding yourself that he’s learned to accept and tolerate things he doesn’t necessarily like about you can help you to cut him some slack.

Be Careful When It Comes to His Feelings

Men can be good at bottling things up, but that doesn’t mean that nothing bothers him. Try offering him support when he’s in a bad place, and be careful of his feelings until he’s out of it. A little encouragement could be just what he needs — and you could benefit from offering that comfort as well.

Be on Time

Some of us are late for everything. But if he’s been on your case about always being late, make the extra effort to respect his time.
