First dates are the best opportunity to get to know someone. Knowing whether or not a first date has the potential for a second one can all boil down to the questions you ask each other over dinner and drinks.

And that made us wonder, what are the best questions to ask a man on a first date? The ones that let you uncover his deal breakers, get a good feeling about your future, or immediately ask for the check? So we asked the internet.

From dating sites to psychologists, to Tinder users, we’ve gathered the best first date questions out there. Are these on your list? Or do you have better questions for a very interesting conversation?

How Was Your Day?

Not only is this a great opening question on a first date, it can tell you a lot about a person. Whether he complains about everything, or seems like he enjoys every day, you’re going to learn a lot about him.

Where Do You Live?

Followed by, “who do you live with?” Is it getting a little bit in his business? Yes. But if he lives with his mother or a dozen roommates it’s better to know now.

What’s Your Love Life Been Like?

This one is just good advice.

You shouldn’t have to ask if someone is dating someone else on a first date, but you really have to. Plus, knowing whether he’s on the rebound or looking for something long term are things you need to know (but are easy to forget to ask).

Do You Cook?

This question almost always turns into a fun debate about who can really put in work in the kitchen and who just thinks they can. And it’s a great way to open the door to a second date and a home-cooked meal.

What’s Your Family Like?

Hearing the funny (or struggle) stories that let you know what a man was like as a child can tell you a lot about what he’s like as an adult — and what to expect from his family.

What’s Your Favorite Movie?

Asking about someone’s favorite movie/album/song is a classic move, but I still say there’s no better way to get to know someone.

How Would Your Friends Describe You?

“Tell me about yourself” always felt like an awkward date question. Asking him what his friends think about him is a fun way to get closer to the truth about him. And you might be surprised at what you find out.

Which Superpower Do You Wish You Had?

This one is a good sense of humor test. How he reacts to a silly question will tell you a lot bout whether or not he enjoys a little silliness as much as you do.

Do You Like Your Job?

Most dates start out with “So, what do you do for a living?” Follow it up with “Do you like it?” and you are sure to find out a lot about his goals, his future plans, and whether or not he’s happy about where he is in life right now.

What’s Your Biggest Goal Right Now?

Life isn’t all about work, and this is a good way to get to know his hobbies, goals, and what he’s up to when he’s not at his 9 to 5.

What’s One Thing About You That Would Surprise Me?

This has always been one of my go-to questions, and the answer always raises an eyebrow.

Your Worst Tinder Moment?

Everyone likes to tell these stories about the people they’ve met while online dating. They’re a great way to connect (and find out what they do and don’t like in a partner without you coming out and asking it).

Where’s Your Favorite Place to Travel?

If you have places you hope to cross off of your bucket list, it’s important to know if he likes to travel as well — and what kind of places he wants to see.

If your ideal trip is one where you relax by a body of water, but his is camping in the woods, that’s info that’s best discussed early on.
