Unfortunately, over the years, we’ve had to watch quite a few custody battles play out in the public eye. For reasons ranging from funny money and poor behavior, we were shocked when news came out that these famous men were granted primary and sole custody of their children over the mothers of their kids. Here are a few examples that definitely had people talking.
Ludacris
The rapper won primary custody of his daughter, Cai Bella, after an ongoing court battle with Tamika Fuller. He decided to try and go after custody when Fuller made a big fuss about wanting $15,000 in monthly child support. According to reports, the fact that Fuller was living way above her means and that she went MIA for some time after the birth of her eldest daughter, hurt her case.
Dwyane Wade
If their divorce settlement took years to complete, then you know good and well that coming to an agreement on custody was going to be rough. Wade wound up winning sole custody of his sons, Zaire and Zion, from ex-wife, Siohvaughn Funches Wade, in 2011. She has since claimed that the NBA star has interfered on more than one occasion with visitation.
Usher
No matter what you might think of Tameka Raymond, after the death of her son Kile, the idea of her losing custody of her sons with Usher, Usher Raymond V and Naviyd, was pretty heartbreaking. She claimed his “status” helped him win. In 2012 he was granted custody, and in 2013, Tameka took him back to court for temporary custody after their son, Usher, almost drowned in a pool at the singer’s home. Her request was denied.
Deion Sanders
In 2013, the iconic athlete was awarded primary custody of his two sons with Pilar Sanders, and she was granted primary custody of their daughter, Shelomi. But a week later, Deion was also granted custody of Shelomi. Pilar has since made claims that Deion has been abusing their children. And in December, Pilar was arrested for keeping their kids during visitation for longer than what was allowed in their divorce agreement, and for taking them when she was not supposed to.
Kevin Federline
Around the time that Britney Spears was going through a nervous breakdown in front of our eyes, she lost physical custody of her sons to Kevin Federline. In 2008, Federline was granted sole and legal custody of their boys when Spears refused to turn over their sons, and was found in her home appearing to be under the influence of something. While Federline still has custody of their sons, Spears has gone through a major change (and received help) and is very much involved in her sons’ lives.
Lenny Kravitz
Before we really got to know Zoe Kravitz, at the age of 12, her father, Lenny Kravitz, was granted primary custody of her after Lisa Bonet gave up custody. This was back in 2001, and according to reports, Zoe wanted to live with her father so that they could get closer. It’s now 2015, and the two seem to be thick as thieves. And even better, Lenny, Lisa and Zoe are all very close.
Jesse James
The former TV personality and ex-husband of Sandra Bullock won custody of his daughter, Sunny. He was first given custody after the child’s mother, Janine Lindemulder, went to prison for six months for tax evasion. When she got out, she tried to regain custody of Sunny, but James ended up retaining custody.
Keith Sweat
Keith Sweat and Lisa Wu, formerly of “Real Housewives of Atlanta,” have two sons from their marriage–Jordan and Justin. He was awarded primary custody of the boys in 2003 after a judge said they lacked structure due to her business ventures, and Wu spending a reckless amount of money on herself. Wu was upset that the boys couldn’t even appear on RHOA when she was on the show, but that was because Sweat wouldn’t sign a waiver to have his sons exposed to reality TV.
Eminem
Due to drug problems at one point, Eminem was granted full custody of his daughter, Hailie, from ex-wife Kim Scott. They would eventually agree to share custody again, and despite writing songs about her in the past that were anything but loving, they have managed to get along and get along well for the sake of Hailie, who is now 19.
