One of the many things that we love about Gabrielle Union is that although she’s now the wife of a wildly successful basketball star, she hasn’t allowed her husband or their relationship to distract her. The 42-year-old beauty is still actively working and making significant strides in her career. Less than 72 hours after the season two premiere of her hit television show “Being Mary Jane,” BET announced that they would be picking up the series for a third season, which the actress says took a lot of pressure off of her and her pocketbook.

“[It took] a lot of pressure off of my accountant’s shoulders knowing that the mortgage is going to be paid,” Union jokingly told “Today’s” Matt Lauer. “No, we never have that luxury—ever—of knowing where our next check is coming from. It gives us the freedom to just work and not the pressure of ‘what if no one likes this?’ It’s like we know that we’re doing great work and it’s a huge vote of confidence.”

As for where she draws her inspiration from, Union says that she studied real-life news anchors such as Soledad O’Brien.

“I would like to think that I have adopted some of the more believable qualities of respected anchors, but because we don’t know what happens in your lives when you leave, I made her a hot mess. I’m obsessed with Soledad O’Brien and that’s sort of who I patterned her after. But Soledad has an amazing life from what we can see, but Mary Jane just can’t get right.”

Transitioning from discussion of Mary Jane’s messy life to her own complicated personal life, Gabby explained how she makes her marriage work despite the fact that she and her new husband are frequently apart due to his game schedule and her filming obligations.

“I come home every weekend. I fly back and forth.”

And if it just so happens that Wade is not home on weekends, Union says that she flies out to wherever he’s going to be.

“I fly wherever that is or I’ll fly home and hang out with the kids. We figure it out and make it work and a lot of compromise.”
