If you spend too much time paying attention to what the mainstream media says, you may forget that women with curves are quite s*xy and are making major moves in the spotlight. Today we tip our hats to some of our favorite plus-size celebrities and women who remind us that all shapes and sizes are beautiful!
JOANNE BORGELLA
We kick off this list with a woman who inspired us not only because of her curves, but because of how she bravely dealt with her battle with cancer for more than a year. Sadly, 32-year-old Joanne Borgella lost her battle with endometrial cancer in October, but we will always remember this former “American Idol” contestant and model for her voice, her strength and her amazing beauty.
OCTAVIA SPENCER
Next on our list is Academy Award winning actress Octavia Spencer. This amazing actress is a great example of what it means to be full-figured and comfortable in your own skin. We admire Octavia for her work and for her great example to young women and girls.
MO’NIQUE
One of the first names that came to mind when it comes to paying tribute to plus-sized celebrities was none other than Mo’Nique. This dazzling Academy Award winning actress has entertained us over the years and has also inspired full-figured women to not only love themselves, but also be and stay healthy. She recently shed 80 pounds and after weighing 300 pounds, told ABC News that she was down to 218.
QUEEN LATIFAH
Queen Latifah, 44, is on top of her game as a talk show host, actress, producer and musician. That has a lot to do with loving herself and not being worried about what other people have to say.
“When I was around 18, I looked in the mirror and said, ‘You’re either going to love yourself or hate yourself.’ And I decided to love myself. That changed a lot of things.”
Queen has been a part of our lives for many years and we have much love for the positive role model!
AMBER RILEY
This show-stopping actress from “Glee” has warmed our hearts over the years with her great performances and inspired many young girls along the way.
“When I receive letters from girls that say, ‘You give me confidence,’ I think, ‘Wow, this is amazing.’ That’s my goal: to let people know it’s truly what’s on the inside that counts.”
GABOUREY SIDIBE
Many of us were first introduced to Gabourey Sidibe from her Oscar-nominated work in the intense drama, Precious. Gabourey has been a shining example of what it means to be beautiful on the inside and outside! And she’s not afraid to put people in their place when they attack her size, as she did after this year’s Golden Globes.
“To people making mean comments about my GG pics, I mos def cried about it on that private jet on my way to my dream job last night. #JK”
MELISSA MCCARTHY
This Emmy Award winning actress and comedienne has kept us laughing throughout the years with her unique blend of comedy and satire. McCarthy has proudly displayed her curves and has often mentioned in interviews that although there are challenges to being bigger in Hollywood, she is not ashamed of her looks and empowers other women to embrace their bodies too.
ADELE
With one of the most recognizable voices in the industry, Adele has on top since her chart-topping debut in 2008. Critics wondered if Adele would have success in the shallow music industry given that she is a curvy singer, but she has proven that success can come to anyone if you’ve got the talent (and a great personality).
KELLY PRICE
R&B songstress Kelly Price is another woman who has been a proud plus-sized woman since we first were introduced to her in the ’90s. She acknowledges that wanting to continue sharing her gifts with the world is why she’s tried to lose some weight and get healthy over the years. “To be able to use a God-given gift and to live from it and to really live well from it, I would be a fool to allow being undisciplined to cut my life short and so that’s really what it’s about.”
COUNTESS VAUGHN
For those of us who grew up in the ’90s, we remember “The Parkers” and the one and only Countess Vaughn! Her hilarious role on the show kept us tuned in. On her new show, “Hollywood Divas,” she has spoken about trying to keep her weight in check, a struggle we’re sure that many can relate to.
TAMELA MANN
Gospel singer and actress Tamela Mann is a gorgeous full-figured woman who inspires us to know that the sky is the limit when it comes to being a success in any endeavor! And speaking of success, Mann has lost quite a few pounds recently with hard work and determination. “I was at a 30/32, now I’m down to like a 18/20, sometimes a 16 tops. But my bottom is still like a 20, I’m hippy.”
KIM COLES
One of our favorite actresses and comediennes is none other than the fabulous Kim Coles! She has publicly shared her weight loss goals and told The Chicago Defender a few years ago that she loves her body, but wants to make sure that she’s healthy.
“I don’t hate my body or myself. It’s about knowing the quality of life I want to have in 30 years. I want to be a foxy 80-year-old and be able to walk up all the flights of stairs. I want to have the quality of life where my knees don’t hurt. I shouldn’t make a groaning sound at age 47 when I get up out of a chair. I’m certain that being overweight is hampering that lifestyle I want to have 30 years from now.”
WHITNEY THOMPSON
This “America’s Next Top Model” winner is a successful plus-sized model who shows us that beauty radiates from within! She’s been on the cover of magazines, in CoverGirl ads and started not only a jewelry line but a dating site as well. Winning!
YVETTE NICOLE BROWN
Comedienne Yvette Nicole Brown of “Community” fame put it like this when speaking on her size to the ladies of “The View” in 2011:
“I think people like to see the aspirational people—you want to see the beautiful Halle Berry’s—but then you wanna see somebody that looks like you. So I’m eating for America.”
