Ninety-four million in donations isn’t the only thing to come out of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.
50 Cent took the fundraising to another level when he publicly shamed boxer Floyd Mayweather about his illiteracy by challenging him to read a page of Harry Potter without stuttering in an exchange for $750,000 donated to a charity of his choice.
Since then, the jokes about Floyd Mayweather’s reading difficulties have gone viral and left us all wondering if this bit of internet humor hasn’t taken things too far. And you won’t believe the celebrities who bothered to get involved…
50s original challenge
50 posted this “ALS/ESL Challenge” after boxing bad boy Floyd Mayweather allegedly dropped a little shade of his own, saying that 50, T.I. and Nelly weren’t relevant anymore. And just like that, one of the internet’s most viral memes was born.
This Note to Tiny
We don’t know how to feel about this note to Tiny. We want to laugh but we feel terrible about it. And we want to be mad at 50 Cent for posting it, but it did come with a heartfelt note to @floydmayweather saying that 50 loves him like a brother and encouraging to call his family and stop “forgetting the people who matter boy.”
The Breakfast Club Crew
After Charlamagne the God posted this audio clip of Floyd struggling to read a promo, he said “In hindsight, I feel a little bad about it, just a little, because I didn’t know there were that many people out there suffering from illiteracy.” We sort of feel the same way too.
Jimmy Kimmel Too?
According to this Instagram post by 50 Cent, Jimmy Kimmel agreed to let Floyd read Cat in the Hat on the show — because Harry Potter might be too advanced. There’s been no word from Jimmy Kimmel’s camp on whether or not he actually co-signed 50’s next stunt, but if he did it can’t be his proudest moment.
Nelly’s Low-Key Shade
On a recent episode of ESPN’s Highly Questionable, they asked Nelly to talk about his beef with Floyd. Nelly said he didn’t have any beef with Floyd, that it was all a misunderstanding — “because it’s kind of hard talking to a guy who hasn’t graduated from high school.” Shots. Fired.
This Sweaty Cat in the Hat
And after the Jimmy Kimmel stunt, the illiteracy jokes just kept coming.
These Miranda Rights
50 Cent posted this photo on his Instagram page in response to Floyd Mayweather’s alleged efforts to find “people to say you can read.” We’d find it funnier if 50 had donated $1,000 to fight illiteracy with each one of his posts.
Fantasia v. Floyd
Back in 2005, Fantasia Barrino revealed her struggles with illiteracy in her memoir Life is Not a Fairy Tale.
In the book, Fantasia talks about faking her way through scripted parts of American Idol, and the shame she felt about not being able to read to her daughter Zion — and we’re really struggling to understand what’s funny about that.
This Fatherly Photo
After Blue Ivy Gate, you think people would have learned that kids are off limits — even if it’s just this disrespectful picture and not an inappropriate joke on 106 and Park.
This Meaningful Moment
We doubt this is going to be much inspiration for the one in four American children who grow up without learning how to read.
Potter v. Mayweather
50 Cent’s caption on this post? “Champ your first loss is to Harry Potter.”
This School Session
Now is 50 Cent wrong? Or should we be mad at the 221,000 Instagram followers who liked this image?
This Headline
What part of journalistic integrity is this shady headline?
This Kermit Meme
Kermit is always funny — until you start to think about how many kids are reading this and feeling worse about a fixable problem.
Floyd’s Response
Floyd Mayweather posted these pics of his paychecks as a response to his critics saying “Read this $72,276,000.00. God bless.”
