If you’ve ever noticed an album of your favorite band was particularly dark, or maybe particularly cheesy, it could be because the romantically involved band members were directing their love roller coaster into their songs. Here are 15 band members who dated on the low.
Arcade Fire
Win Butler and Regine Chasagne of this beloved alternative group have been married since 2003, just two years after the group formed.
The White stripes
The band with arguably one of the most amazing guitarists features Jack White and Meg White, who for years allowed the world to believe they were siblings. In reality, the two were divorcees. They were married between 1996 and 2000, but kept the band together after their divorce.
Fleetwood Mac
This band has seen several romantic entanglements within it, which perhaps is why their songs have so much passion! At one point, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks were together for six years. Later Nicks had an affair with Mick Fleetwood, who was married at the time.
ABBA
ABBA started as a group made up of two couples: Agnetha Fältskog and Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid Lyngstad. Both couples were divorced by 1981, and the band broke up shortly after.
Rilo Kiley
This angsty girl power group lead by Jenny Lewis formed in 1998. Lewis and Blake Sennett dated for many years but broke up in 2002. However, the band remained active until 2010.
Talking Heads
You know them as founding members of the Talking Heads, but husband and wife Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz began in a band called the Tom Tom Club in 1981. They’ve been married since 1977.
New Order
After Joy Division frontman Ian Curtis committed suicide, the remaining members of the band invited Gillian Gilbert to form a new band—New Order. Gilbert and Stephen Morris married in 1993.
Matt & Kim
There could be a reason this group puts out such happy music: it’s made by lovers! Matt Johnson and Kim Schifino have been in a band since 2004, and are romantically involved.
Blondie
Blondie got together in 1974 and Debbie Harry and Chris Stein started dating while in the band. The band has since split, but Harry and Stein remain together, just unmarried.
No Doubt
You know Stefani’s partner today as Gavin Rossdale, but she spent seven of the early years of No Doubt romantically involved with band member Tony Kanal. The two broke up before releasing Tragic Kingdom, but the band stayed together.
Stereolab
The musical duo Tim Gane and Lætitia Sadier were romantically involved and had a child while Stereolab was together. In 2004, the two broke up and in 2009 the band became inactive.
Siouxsie & the Banshees
This band began with just Siouxsie Sioux (Susan Ballion) and Steven Severin. Later Peter Edward Clarke joined the band, and eventually Sioux and Clarke married. Siouxsie & the Banshees eventually split up, but Sioux and Clarke are still married and now make music with a group called The Creatures.
The Dresden Dolls
It was never very publicized, but Amanda Palmer did admit to Playboy magazine in an interview that she and band mate Brian Viglione had slept together. How many times or how regularly was undisclosed.
Black Eyed Peas
Fergie and band mate Jamie Gomez (aka Taboo) made out one time, but Will.I.Am put a stop to it immediately, believing the romance would be bad for the band.
