Most of you reading this were probably either born between 1990 and 1999 or had a child between that time, because with this kind of music floating around, almost everybody was pregnant. From “Feenin'” to “Freak Me Baby,” let’s take a moment and look back at all the slow jams that made the ’90s and early 2000s a helluva decade.
“Freek’n You,” Jodeci
This is the official anthem for out-of-control hormones. And we’re glad it came out in the 90s — when you were more likely to hear K-Ci and Jojo sing than see them. Watching that vein pop out on K-Ci’s neck sort of ruins the fantasy.
“T-Shirt and My Panties On,” Adina Howard
Adina’s biggest hit was “Freak Like Me” and it was pretty scandalous when it dropped. But when it comes to bedrom anthems, “T-Shirt and My Panties” wins hands down. That song left nothing to the imagination…
“Big Momma Thang,” Lil’ Kim
I knew way too many lyrics to this song when I was way too young. But I — and most of the world — had just never heard such a scandalous female mc and we couldn’t stop listening.
“Uncle Luke,” Luther Campbell
Remember Uncle Luke? We’re just going to put the whole dang album up here because everything on it was filthy. So filthy that we can’t even write most of the song titles without upsetting the censors. “Scarred” was the safest video we could list that most of us can remember sweating our perms out to on the dance floor.
“Freak Me Baby,” Silk
Maybe it was all the silk everyone kept wearing in the ’90s that made everyone so horny. Back in the day it was all about silk boxers, silk sheets (but not at the same time ’cause you’ll slide off) and those colorful silk pajamas that everyone wore. Silk didn’t actually wear any silk in this video, but it’s still one of the freakiest songs of the time.
“Uhh Ahhm” Boyz II Men
Even clean-cut Boyz II Men jumped on the freak nasty music bandwagon. They went from harmonizing in sweater vests to this song, which is 90% sex noises.
“Do Me,” Bell Biv DeVoe
Bell Biv DeVoe’s “Do Me” was proof positive that this trend was getting out of hand. Everyone was so busy trying to outfreak eachother, they missed these wildly inappropriate lyrics:
“Backstage, underage/Adolescent/How ya doing? Fine, she replied/I sighed, I like to do the wild thing/Action took place…”
Umm, somebody call Child Protective Services, we’ve got an R. Kelly situation on our hands.
“Any Time, Any Place,” Janet Jackson
Remember when Ms. Jackson went through her “Velvet Rope” phase and all her songs were about sexual adventures?
“Rock the Boat,” Aaliyah
This song was freaky on the down low. When I listened to this as a kid, I straight up thought it was about a boat ride. Or maybe dancing on a boat. And then I was like “Ooh. Dang, Aaliyah.”
“So Anxious,” Ginuwine
This song was a dangerous weapon in any man’s rotation.
“Untitled (How Does It Feel),” D’Angelo
OK, so technically this song was released in 2000 but it belongs on the list. Along with this video…
“12 Play,” R. Kelly
We mean the song, but really the whole “12 Play” album could go on this list: “Bump N’ Grind,” “Your Body’s Calling,” “Seems Like You’re Ready”… R. Kelly tried to get folks pregnant for real.
“Doin It,” LL Cool J
Remember when LL’s wife went on “Oprah’s Next Chapter” and said that she didn’t like this song? I bet she didn’t. This track just made Ladies Love Cool James even more.
“Nice and Slow,” Usher
Usher was the ultimate ladies man and this was his best ’90s bedroom jam.
“Knockin the Boots,” H-Town
No list would be compete without this jam.
