Love & Hip-Hop Coming To H-Town? 15 Things We Love About Houston

Why does Mona Scott-Young want to film the next Love and Hip Hop in Houston? Because it’s one of the best cities on the third coast. We’ve got a bang of reasons why we’re down for H-town. If you got your own reasons to love the Bayou City, be sure to let us know in the comments section.

The Food

From Tex-Mex to Cajun, BBQ to Asian, Houston has it all. And claiming your favorite spot can be fighting words. We expect to see the Love & Hip-Hop Houston cast eating at The Breakfast Klub, Morton’s Steakhouse or maybe even Frenchy’s.

The Galleria

Ask any Houstonian and they’ll tell you that The Galleria is the best mall in the world. It’s got four distinct sections — each in its own building — a hotel, and a skating rink. It’s so big it takes about an hour and 45 minutes to walk from one side to the other — or at least that’s what it feels like.

97.9 The Box

This is the Houston Radio station. You’ve got Chopped and Screwed Sundays, The Mad Hatta Morning Show, and a lot of local jams you just don’t hear anywhere else. When you’re in H-Town, the dial doesn’t move from this station…except maybe to 102.1 on Sundays or when you need an R&B fix.

Screw Music

Speaking of Chopped and Screwed, Beyonce gave the world a little taste of Houston’s native sound in “Bow Down/I Been On.” Since DJ Screw, folks have been chopping (remixing) and screwing (slowing down) classic hits. It’s the best way to listen to music when you’re sippin on that syrup (which we don’t recommend because we’re pretty sure it’s what killed DJ Screw).

The Rockets

We all have love for the Rockets. We’ve had Olajuwon, Yao Ming, Steve Francis and Robert Horry…it’s been a while since we’ve brought home the championship but everyone still has love for the home team.

The Rappers

We don’t know anything about the “Love & Hip-Hop Houston” lineup, but we do know Houston has a bang of great rappers. We’ve got Scarface and the Geto Boys, UGK, Slim Thug, Chamillionaire, Paul Wall and enough that you’ve never heard of to keep LAHHH on for many seasons to come.

Beyonce

Ya’ll thought we forgot about Bey? Don’t expect to see her on Love & Hip-Hop Houston or anything because we all know Queen Bey is too famous for Mona Scott-Young’s shenanigans, but still H-town is her birthplace.

Galveston

Need something to do for the long weekend? Head on down to Galveston Island. It’s Houston’s official beach. People used to head down there 200K at a time, but the Kappa Beach Party was so hood they shut it down. But Galveston is still a great place to eat, rock a two piece and hang out on the long weekend. But nobody really swims. The water quality is…questionable and the undertow is no joke.

The Side We’re From

Houston is divided into the north side and the south side. The south side has the Galleria. The north side has a lot of news reports about dudes getting car jacked at gun point. But whatever side they’re from, people love their hood — and don’t like the other. They even have their own dances: The southside and the northside.

The Neighborhood We Represent

Right after people know what side you’re from, the want to know what neighborhood you represent. Is it Third Ward, Fifth Ward, Hiram Clarke, Sunny Side, Acres Home or Mo City? Bey even repped The Trey at The Grammy’s.

The Club Scene

Houston is all about that night life. You can sip a martini at the Red Door or Scott Gertner’s Sports Bar Live or get a little rowdy at Carrington’s.

The After the Club Scene

Have we mentioned that we love to eat in Houston? After the club you can hit up Chaco’s or Taco Cabana. The food is OK, but it’s more about seeing folks and being seen. Everybody from the club will wind up there at one point in the night or another. They’re like Houston’s unofficial club after party.

The Rides

Texans take their cars seriously. What do you know about Crown Vics, 20-inch rims and tops droppin? In Houston, your ride is important because you’ll spend a lot of time in it. They’ve been doing construction on the highway since I’ve been alive and rush hour lasts from 9am to 630pm.

Gay Pride

There’s nothing close-minded about Montrose. In Houston, we celebrate the LGBT community. There’s a gay pride parade, lots of gay and lesbian bars and even a drag queen brunch at Bayou City Bar and Grill.
