Official Advanced Placement African American Studies Course Draws Criticism From All Sides
The Possible Political Agenda Behind It
The changes to the Advanced Placement African American Studies course were released weeks after Diaz Jr. published his concerns about the pilot course, accusing it of being “woke indoctrination masquerading as education.”
Some of the commissioner’s other concerns involved issues such as there being “no balance” in the part covering the reparations movement and that Angela Davis (a feminist political activist featured in the pilot) is a “self-avowed communist.” Florida ultimately banned the pilot course.
Many are questioning whether or not the College Board made its changes to appease Florida. They claim that their adjustments were not politically motivated and that these changes were well in the works long before Florida’s rejection of the pilot course.
Regardless of their motivations, teachers and activists alike find the changes disturbing. In fact, 200 African American history professors signed an open letter denouncing the changes.
