stay at home father families

The stay-at-home dad (SAHD moving forward) is on the rise. Things are changing, and for the better. While things like paid paternity leave are still very much up for discussion and not commonplace, our society is becoming more comfortable with the idea of the man staying home and taking care of the kids while the mother works. I did just say more comfortable—not entirely comfortable. Prejudices and stereotypes that have existed for centuries don’t just go away in a matter of a couple of progressive decades. It would be amazing if they did though, right? But that’s just not the case. Even my most woke of friends make little comments when they learn of a SAHD. The revelation sparks some discussion, and sometimes some rather backwards comments. Here are judgments SAHDs face, that they really shouldn’t.

Working dads can be the worst

I’ve seen it with my own two eyes: working dads who roll their eyes when they hear of a SAHD. We’ll all be getting together as a big group—several couples—for a dinner party. One woman will announce that a new couple is joining the group—the woman is a insert career position here and the man is a SAHD. And the working dads give each other a little side glance.
